We are currently seeking aBattery Engineer/Scientistfor our Materials & Corrosion EngineeringPractice in Natick, MA. In this role, you will work as part of a team tosolve challenging, real world problems related to batteries, energy storage, and materials science for our clients. This individual will work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers and will play a key role in designing and running experiments, as well as interpreting and presenting data both within Exponent, and to external clients. This position requires some travel (limited during COVID-19) and will involve collaboration with scientists and engineers from other Exponent offices and practices covering a wide range of industries. A long-term goal for a successful candidate will be to develop business by obtaining new projects and bringing new clients to the firm, while continuing to grow professionally as an expert in your field.


You will be responsible for:



  • Communicatingand working effectively with other Exponent staff at all levels of the company

  • Planning and executing laboratory tests to support projects

  • Conducting hands-on failure analysis

  • Attending and contributing to field inspections

  • Performing materials characterization, using techniques such as photography, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray computed tomography scanning, and electrochemical analysis techniques

  • Analyzing data and reporting results at an appropriate technical level for the intended audience


You will have the following skills and qualifications:



  • Ph.D. inMaterials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field, and familiarity with Mechanical Engineering and/or Electrical Engineering

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Ability to work within project teams with strong desire to contribute and collaborate

  • Strong organization and project management skills

  • Potential for technical and project managerial leadership

  • Experience working on batteries and/or energy storage devices in a laboratory setting

  • Experience designing and conducting materials science/energy storage experiments and analyzing experimental data

  • Must be able to convey complex technical information to individuals in engineering, business, legal, and related industries

  • Broad knowledge base of materials science and engineering, preferably with a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering or Chemical Engineering, with demonstrated expertise in a batteries/energy storage

  • Hands on experience with batteries and battery materials

  • Experience performing materials characterization, using techniques such as photography, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray computed tomography scanning, electrochemical analysis, or computational modeling
