Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY (What is done and why)

The Security Specialist is responsible for managing proactive approaches for identification and mitigation of physical security related incidences.  The Security Specialist helps to ensure Credit Union assets are protected, losses are minimized, and the safety and security of Credit Union employees and members are kept at the forefront. This position will manage the security related tickets, security systems, and bank equipment including, but not limited to security footage, alarms, control systems, keys, safe deposit boxes and vaults.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, IN PRIORITY ORDER (Majority of duties, but not meant to be all inclusive or prevent other duties from being assigned as necessary)


  1. Assumes the responsibility for maintenance of security related processes and equipment. Time: 50%


    • Responsible for the monitoring processes for branch and ATM cameras to ensure continual and optimal levels of security view and clarity.

    • Responsible for maintaining a current security access level matrix providing appropriate access levels commensurate with position and authority level.

    • Responsible for alarm and badge panel access and access levels. Continually evaluate and adjust access to align with access requirements of current staff.  Responsible for creation of new and replacement employee access badges.

    • Responsible for ongoing maintenance of vendor management for all security related vendors.

    • Responsible for the initial processing of security related invoices.

    • Responsible for security related tickets in the Physical Security portal, and coordinating resolution of outstanding items.

    •  Responsible for the development and review of facility emergency action plans.


  2. Support the Security Manager with security related protocols, including: Time: 30%

    • All security related branch security incidents including robbery, suspicious individuals, ATM breach and suspicious items.

    • Identify and manage potential security risk as it relates to branch operations and safety of members and staff. Responsible for the coordination of individuals and/or departments and branches to mitigate risk.

    • Maintain individualized branch robbery protocol to mitigate adverse consequences to members and staff.

    • Conduct annual Robbery, Active Shooter, Workplace Violence and Emergency Action Plan training in conjunction with local law enforcement.

    • Conduct Physical Security Threat Assessments.

    • Purchase, placement, and installation of all security related equipment.


  3. Under guidance of the Security Manager and Director of Risk Management, assists with: Time 10%

    • The maintenance of the Physical Security Standards and Procedures Manual.

    • Business Continuity program requirements by providing guidance and direction to business unit stakeholders to ensure their Business Impact Analysis and Business Continuity Plan are in accordance with United Federal Credit Union’s Business Continuity Policy and align with guidance outlined by FFIEC.


  4. Prepares security related reports for the Security Team. Time 5%

  5. Partners with internal business owners and external agencies to continually improve detection of security related issues and preventative processes and controls. Time: 5%

EDUCATION (Minimum education required to perform the duties of this position)


  • Associates degree in related field or one-year work experience required.

EXPERIENCE (Minimum experience required to perform the duties of this position)

In addition to the education requirement:


  • One-year business security experience within multiple locations handling cash with a focus on security implementation, and loss prevention preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Minimum technical and communication skill levels and licenses/certificates normally required to perform the duties of this position)


  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple, high-priority projects with a keen attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to provide actionable information clearly and effectively, including listening and presentation skills

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member, while using discretion in decision making and sound judgment in problem solving

  • Should have experience with financial institution risk management and security as well as contract and vendor negotiation.

  • Must have strong working knowledge of pertinent laws and the law enforcement community.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS (Physical effort generally associated with this position)

Work involves standing and walking for brief periods of time, but most work is done from a seated position. A great deal of time is spent on the telephone. There is potential for eyestrain from reading detailed reports and computer screen. Deadlines, workloads and pressure to achieve goals may cause increased stress levels.

WORKING CONDITIONS (Typical working conditions associated with this type of work and environmental hazards, if any, that may be encountered in performing the duties of this position)

Internal - Work is normally performed in climate-controlled office environment. Noise level is moderate and includes sounds of normal office equipment (computers, telephones, etc.). No known environmental hazards are encountered in normal performance of duties. Length of day is unpredictable; extended hours may be required. Normal working hours are Monday thru Friday from 8:30-5:00PM.  There may be times that assistance will be requested outside of the normal hours to include nights and weekends.

External - Some travel is required; however, information on environmental conditions is not available.
