Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Nuclear Science and Technology group is seeking forward-thinking, professionals interested in exploring a technical career as a Modeling and Simulation Specialist.

Responsibilities Include:

The Modeling and Simulation Specialist will be responsible for the development of tools, algorithms and methods for machine learning, data analysis, uncertainty quantification and risk analysis of complex systems.

  • As a member of the RAVEN core team ( the Modeling and Simulation Specialist will have the opportunity to apply and develop the most advanced techniques in uncertainty quantification, validation, risk analysis, optimization, and artificial intelligence to problem of interest to nuclear engineering like experimental design, reactor design, safety evaluations, and economic performance of nuclear power plants.

  • Programs supported will include IES, LWRS, and RAVEN development and applications. The Modeling and Simulation Specialist will be involved in implementing new advanced methodologies that will be deployed on large computing clusters in an efficient and highly-scalable way.

Minimum Requirements:

Required qualifications:

Level 2 PhD in nuclear science/engineering, mathematics, or related engineering field

  • Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills (in English)

  • A good understanding of one fields among the following: nuclear reactor related thermohydraulic, safety, and system, reactor physics, fuel performance, electricity market financial modeling and cash flow based financial analysis of complex project.

  • Object-oriented programming (preferably python)

  • Able to work in a culturally diverse environment.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Knowledge with artificial intelligence (supervised learning, unsupervised learning)

  • Knowledge with risk analysis

  • Knowledge of reduced order modeling techniques

  • Software management platform (e.g. svn, git etc)

  • Knowledge of software development methodologies (e.g. Agile, etc.) and basic of NQ1 procedures

  • Experience in working on the development of a large software platform
