The Associate Director, R&D will be responsible for managing the activities related to product development, product line extensions, and process improvements. These activities include, but are not limited to, assessing new technology, conducting competitive evaluations, and training of Manufacturing personnel in new procedures. This position may provide specialized scientific support or services to the organization (Manufacturing, Quality, etc.), may supervise Core Team Leaders for product development, product line extensions, or activities related to strategic business development. Assists in the development of budgets and schedules. Additional responsibilities may include participation in troubleshooting investigations to resolve production issues.

Responsible for coordinating activities pertaining to developing / improving products in accordance with QPC041, New Product Development Guidelines.

  • Ensure that new processes and methods are robust, scalable, well characterized, economical and validated in compliance with QSRs, ISO and other regulatory and license requirements

  • Works with Manufacturing groups to ensure effective transfer and implementation of new processes, and products

  • Ensures detailed documentation of the technology to be transferred, and provides recommendations to the organization as to the products preparedness for launch

  • Trains manufacturing employees in new and transferred procedures

  • Acts as advisor for direct reports to meet schedules and help resolve technical problems

  • Develop and administer budgets, schedules and performance requirements for the Research and Development department.

  • Create realistic budgets that will capture the estimated costs, and resources required

  • Work with staff to draw realistic but challenging time lines/priorities and follow-up/support their timely execution.

  • Establishes department goals that support corporate objectives and are aligned with the overall company strategy.

  • Ensures appropriate representation on all project teams and committees as needed.

  • Attracts, retains and motivates a high caliber team

  • Ensures communication of all pertinent information to all required levels

  • Carries out duties in compliance with established business policies


  • Minimum B.S./B.A. required. Recommended 10+ years related experience and 5+ years management experience (project management of a scientific group, or a combination of project management & scientific experience).

  • Advanced degree desirable. Requires sufficient combination of scientific experience and education to obtain a level of technical expertise to be able to coach and direct the work of other scientists.


  • Expert knowledge of product development and manufacturability

  • Excellent project management skills

  • Excellent prioritization, organization and the ability to multitask

  • Ability to attract, retain and motivate a highly skilled technical group

  • Experience in QSR (Quality System Regulations)

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to foster strong interpersonal relationships between groups

  • Knowledge of the budgeting process, planning, and building realistic timelines

  • Strong knowledge of product development

  • Experience in lateral flow technology (preferred)

Works on projects requiring expert knowledge of product development, manufacturability, scale issues, cost, etc. This individual will be responsible for overseeing a technical staff that will work on abstract problems related to product development, product/process validation, supplier evaluation, and solving unforeseen technical issues. Will be responsible for ensuring validations are based on statistical relevance, and prove product robustness with scientific integrity. Exercises discretion within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
