Summary of Position:


Gain the skills, knowledge, and exposure necessary to advance your career through this unique opportunity in the Operations Management Trainee rotational program with Commonwealth Building Materials, Inc. This entry-level position provides the opportunity to train for your career in an entrepreneurial environment steeped in a tradition of success. Our team approach engages you in all aspects of our business - sales, operations and maintenance. This knowledge will enable you to implement more successful solutions within the function of operations. This position is based out of the Lynchburg, VA yard.


Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels in the yard, control shrinkage & damaged inventory, oversee monthly cycle counting & close out procedures, and negotiate pricing, terms, conditions & program details with vendors

  • Responsible for training and enforcing that all yard employees adhere to company safety, driving, and machinery policies

  • Organize and host weekly safety meetings with appropriate yard personnel

  • Perform weekly and monthly GMS management safety reviews

  • Maintain open and clear lines of communication with customers at all times, informing them of any issues related to their order & delivery if they should arise

  • Monitor the delivery of materials from other yards to coordinate with agreed upon "Drop Dead" time

  • Case pick reduction

  • Warehouse layout changes

  • Implementing new software

  • Reducing overweight trucks

  • Ability to self-manage, show initiative and be proactive

  • Communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing to coworkers and customers

  • Able to work in a fast-paced, building materials distribution yard

  • Ability to interpret customer needs, assess requirements and identify solutions

  • Strong verbal communication skills

  • Ability to organize work and manage time


Basic Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent work experience

  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Internship or related work experience in a customer facing or sales role preferred

  • Results oriented, attention to detail and good time management skills


Physical Demands:



  • Must be able to remain in stationary position 70%

  • Occasionally, will move about inside the office to access files, office machinery, etc.

  • Must be able to operate basic office machinery

  • Must be able to communicate with team and management and be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

  • Constantly working in office environment


Mental Demands:



  • Must be able to problem solve and prioritize tasks

  • Must be able to manage stress depending on tasks

  • Must be able to multitask

  • Must be able to receive and analyze operations information

  • Must be able to quickly communicate solutions if problems occur

  • Must be able to demonstrate a high degree of sound judgement
