As a Senior Systems Administrator (Level 4) you will work with your colleagues to help plan, coordinate, and manage our group's IT-related activities. You will be responsible for the execution of such activities, and supporting our Group Office and Technical Staff. You will have an opportunity to initiate and take part in creative improvements to our existing IT-related processes. You will have the opportunity to use your skills and experience to support users and systems to drive projects to success, learn new tools and technologies and apply them to future projects.

You will have the following responsibilities spanning a variety of network configurations and operating systems:


  • Maintain the integrity and security of datacenter servers and systems

  • Plan and execute on datacenter hardware maintenance and deployments

  • Install, maintain, administer, troubleshoot, and provide user support of software

  • Work closely on project teams to provide expertise to solve technical problems

  • Set up administrator and service accounts, maintain system documentation, tune system performance, install and maintain system software, and allocate mass storage space

  • Make recommendations for hardware and software purchases

  • Ensure security compliance, respond to scan results, proactively remediate issues

  • Interact with third-party technology vendors and internal providers

  • Conduct systems analysis and development to keep systems current with changing technologies

  • Write scripts and use configuration management tools to automate repetitive tasks and manage complex deployments.

  • Provide and monitor back-up and recovery processes

  • Maintain a solid understanding of Linux, Unix, Windows and macOS operating systems.

Requirements:


  • Strong experience with Linux as a desktop and server OS, including provisioning, securing, and maintenance with an emphasis on CentOS7+, RHEL 7+, and Ubuntu18+

  • A focus on users with the ability to support developers and researchers with server installations, applications, and technologies

  • Hardware experience with desktops, laptops and servers

  • Experience with system deployment to bare metal and VMware ESXi/vCenter environments

  • Experience with Satellite or Katello/Foreman for Linux deployment and maintenance

  • Server purchasing, racking, and networking in a datacenter environment

  • Datacenter hardware experience with racks, cable management, networking, UPS

  • Managing server and storage networking services including DHCP, DNS, VLANs, firewalls, and TLS

  • Monitoring server and network health with Nagios, administering Nagios instance

  • Scripting with UNIX shell

  • Experience with Docker containers, and orchestration tools like Kubernetes or Docker Swarm

  • Investigating and deploying new tools and technologies to improve services, support, and enable modern practices for research programs

  • Perform security patching and maintenance of closed area and secure networks according to procedures and requirements

  • Experience working with: Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence), Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Outlook), MS Active Directory, LDAP, SAP

  • Working in a small team, wearing many hats

  • Ability to recommend technology solutions, deploy, and maintain them independently as well as with support of the IT team

  • Manage and prioritize long-term environment improvement projects concurrently with short term support needs and support requests

  • Strong oral and written communication to document and share knowledge with other system administrators as well as developers, researchers, and other external organizations

  • Must be enthusiastic, innovative, and motivated self-starter able to work independently to complete tasks and meet goals

  • Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of six years of experience, OR a master's degree and a minimum of four years of experience, OR equivalent

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD secret clearance

Preferred Skills


  • Deployment automation with Ansible or Puppet with Foreman, Katello, or Satellite

  • Experience managing tickets in Atlassian Jira

  • Experience with documentation with Atlassian Confluence

  • Experience with AWS virtualization, networking, storage and user access

  • Scripting or programing in a language such as Perl, Python, or Powershell

  • Compliance remediation with STIG, OpenSCAP
