About the job:



Under limited supervision of a APP Clinical Supervisor, assists in carrying out the phases of the nursing process as appropriately delegated. Performs activities and functions of patient care within the legal scope of practice of the Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Iowa. Performs duties as delegated by the Clinical Supervisor. Completes staffing assignments and facilitates bed placement.



What you will do:




LPN I



  • Utilizing the nursing process, assists the registered nurse in providing patient care from a holistic approach, specific to the age of the patient population identified within the department/unit scope of service, and in accordance with the department/unit standards.

  • Demonstrates ability to anticipate/identify physical, psycho­logical, social and spiritual needs of the patient and appropriately reports to the Registered Nurse.

  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with the healthcare team. Coordinates bed placement as requested.

  • Monitors shift staffing. Reviews and evaluates needs according to patient numbers/acuity. Reports to the APP any staffing challenges/needs.

  • Prioritizes and implements appropriate interventions and treatments as delegated by the registered nurse, utilizing the formulated plan of care.

  • Ongoing collaboration with the Advanced Practice Provider to evaluate patient and hospital needs.

  • Identifies and communicates significant changes in pa­tient status (potential or actual adverse pa­tient occurrences) to the registered nurse.

  • Reports and records aspects of data collection/tasks performed into the patient record accurately and concisely.

  • Administers medications (excluding intravenous administration) safely utilizing acquired knowledge and skills according to the physician's order.

  • Ensures that documentation accurately reflects supplies, equipment and services provided.

  • Performs aseptic and sterile treatments/procedures per registered nurse delegation and physician order, and in compliance with MercyOne Medical Center's policy and procedure.

  • Maintains knowledge and demonstrates competency in use of patient equipment.

  • Maintains and annually updates the Licensed Practical Nurse Competency Based Performance/Skills Performance Checklist in compliance with MercyOne Medical Center's estab­lished policy and unit standards.

  • Recognizes lawful/ethical limitations to his/her role in the nursing process.




LPN II

  • Intravenous Therapy- Procedures which may be assumed if delegated by the RN are as follows:

  • - Adds unmixed bags to established IV lines

  • - Regulate rate of non-medicated IV solutions

  • - Discontinue IV therapy

  • Ensures that documentation accurately reflects supplies, equipment and services provided.

  • Performs aseptic and sterile treatments/procedures per registered nurse delegation and physician order, and in compliance with MercyOne Medical Center's policy and procedure.

  • Maintains knowledge and demonstrates competency in use of patient equipment.

  • Maintains and annually updates the Licensed Practical Nurse Competency Based Performance/Skills Performance Checklist in compliance with MercyOne Medical Center's estab­lished policy and unit standards.

  • Recognizes lawful/ethical limitations to his/her role in the nursing process.

  • Takes responsibility and maintains overall unit organization and safety, and reports discrepancies to appropriate person in a timely manner within limitations of authority.

  • Supports and is involved in the application of performance improvement principles.

  • Recognizes and communicates issues/occurrences utilizing established lines of authority, and assists in identifying ways to resolve variances or unacceptable outcomes.

  • Intravenous Therapy - Procedures which may be assumed if delegated by the RN are as follows:

  • Initiation of a peripheral intravenous line for continuous or intermittent therapy using an intermittent infusion device or a therapy cannula not to exceed three inches in length.

  • Administration via peripheral lines, after the first dose has been administered by the RN, of pre-mixed electrolyte solutions or premixed vitamin solutions. The solutions must be prepackaged by the manufacturer or premixed and labeled by a registered pharmacist or Registered Nurse.

  • Administration via peripheral lines, after the first dose has been administered by the RN, of solutions containing potassium chloride that do not exceed 40 meq per liter and at a rate that does not exceed 10 meq per hour. The solutions must be prepackaged by the manufacturer or premixed and labeled by a registered pharmacist or RN.

  • Administration via peripheral lines, after the first dose has been administered by the RN, of intravenous antibiotic solutions prepackaged by the manufacturer or premixed and labeled by a registered pharmacist or RN.

  • Maintenance of the patency of peripheral intravenous lines with heparin irrigation solution or normal saline irrigation solution.

  • LPN II demonstrates understanding;


  • The LPN II may not:

  • Administer medications by bolus or IV push except maintenance doses of analgesics via a patient-controlled analgesia pump set at a lockout interval.

  • Administration of blood and blood products; vasodilators, vasopressors, oxytoxics, chemotherapy, colloid therapy, total parenteral nutrition, hypertonic solutions, anticoagulants, antiarrhythmics, and thrombolytics.

  • Initiation of infusion pumps.

  • Provision of intravenous therapy to a client under the age of 12 or any client weighing less than 80 pounds, with the exception of those activities authorized in the nurse practice.




What we are looking for:




LPN I



  • Requires current Iowa LPN license.

  • Must successfully complete nursing service orientation and unit-based orientation.

  • Maintains Basic Life Support Certification (BCLS).

  • Successful completion of security background check.

  • Must have a general working knowledge of computers.


LPN II



  • Requires current Iowa LPN license.

  • Minimum of 1 year of prior pa­tient care experience required. Must successfully complete nursing service orientation and unit based orientation.

  • Requires completion of a board-approved intravenous therapy certification course offered by a board-approved provider of continuing education. These expanded functions can only be performed in a licensed hospital, licensed skilled nursing facility and a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit. To be eligible for the certification, the LPN must hold a current unrestricted Iowa license and have documentation of 2,080 hours of practice as a LPN.

  • Maintains Basic Life Support Certification (BCLS). Successful completion of security background check.

  • Must successfully complete the Pharmacology and Calculations Tests.
