Scrap Metal Buyer, Raw Materials Procurement



Cleveland Cliffs Steel has an immediate opening for a Scrap Metal Buyer in the Raw Materials Department located in East Chicago, IN.



Assigned title and compensation will be commensurate with candidate's experience.This candidate will provide assistance in maintaining the supply line of Scrap Metal to our steel production facilities, as well as developing and managing relationships with suppliers. The Buyer will interface with Accounting, Engineering, Logistics and Department Managers at each Cleveland Cliffs Facility as well as their peers from the Raw Materials organizations.



Responsibilities:


  • You will be the first point of contact for suppliers, including assisting in writing and managing, contracts, scheduling shipments, issuing purchase orders, negotiating pricing; monitoring quality, and performance; and assisting in the resolution of payment and invoicing issues

  • You will also be the first point of contact for personnel at our steel production facilities that consume these raw materials. Buyer must develop a working relationship with various plant personnel in order to understand their needs while achieving the most cost effective options for the organization.

  • Continuously strive to reduce costs and obtain best value for Cleveland Cliffs.

  • Maintain various raw material inventory trackers to ensure adequate supply to the facilities.

  • Increase the supplier base and initiate trials of new products and new suppliers at our production facilities.

  • Keep abreast of market conditions as to availability, price and quality on a monthly basis.

  • Compile, develop, and analyze data, via Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, for the compilation of various reports.

  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations for use in executive meetings.

  • Seek input from management and Legal on contract requirements and purchasing issues in a timely fashion.

  • Keep management aware of situations and propose action plans towards resolution.

  • Follow department policies and procedures, and participate in activities to continuously improve department workflow.

  • Occasional travel required to visit suppliers and production facilities, and to attend industry conferences.


Minimum Requirements:


  • High school diploma from an accredited school

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • High standard of Ethics

  • High attention to detail

  • Eagerness to learn

  • Ability to think and work independently

  • Willingness to work long hours when necessary

  • Resourceful and takes initiative

  • Strong negotiation and analytical skills

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written

Preferred Requirements:


  • BS or BA in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering or other business-related field from an accredited school or a minimum 5 years of procurement, commodity management or other strategic sourcing experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.

  • Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts and draw conclusions

  • Ability to understand the legal aspects of procurement.

  • Ability to perform in a high-pressure environment while maintaining integrity.

  • Knowledge of the steel industry, steel making processes, recycling and mining industries and its raw materials is a plus.

  • Knowledge of the Cleveland Cliffs Steel organization and departmental and corporate operating policies.

  • Experience within Microsoft Office software, Oracle, SAP, Tabware and other enterprise software.
