Work Cell Assembler at Federal Signal Corporation in University Park, Illinois

Job Description:

Summary of Position: 

Performs duties to identify, order, store and assemble a wide variety of Electrical/Electro-Mechanical/Mechanical components and assemblies.  Performs simple wire and soldering operations using current manufacturing processes.  Must be able to perform Go/No Go tests on small lights, controls and various other sub-assemblies/finished models.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Works from blueprints, schedules, shop orders, specification sheets, process instructions and test instructions.

  • Reviews production schedules for specific periods and arranges for parts, materials, supplies, tooling, gauges and other equipment to meet production requirements.

  • Requisitions and stores materials.

  • Passes Kan Ban cards to producing departments per defined guidelines.

  • Accumulates and moves items between storage areas and work cells.

  • Fills out and submits requisitions, move tickets, finished goods tickets and scrap tickets.

  • Selects, verifies and identifies quantity of materials. Records and/or calls attention to shortages, possible rejected or damaged materials.

  • Sets up work cell equipment.

  • Ability to perform point soldering.

  • Makes necessary adjustments of tools, gauges and equipment. Makes operational checks as required. Monitors work visually to maintain quality standards and notifies supervisor of nonconformance and/or operating difficulties.

  • Performs preventative maintenance (cleaning, oiling, inspecting and minor adjustments) on equipment in the work cell.

  • Trains new and existing employees how to effectively work within the department, instructs them in all facets of the work cell operation.

  • Follows safety rules and keeps work cell area in a clean and orderly condition.

  • Uses computer to check the status of a customer’s order and the status of a shop order.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education, Skills and Work Experience:


  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Experience with light mechanical and/or electrical assembly required.

  • Ability to operate power tools, hand tools, pallet jacks, hand trucks, fixed gauges, jigs, meters, soldering irons, riveters, presses and crimping tools required.

  • Mechanical aptitude, attention to detail and sound judgement required.
