The Assistant Director is an HR generalist whose primary function will be to support New York Institute of Technology employees, managers and leadership in all HR-related areas.

As a member of the New York Tech HR team reporting to the Director of Human Resources the Assistant Director will provide support in all employee and labor relations, recruiting and general HR generalist support. The Assistant Director will serve as trusted advisor to to manager assisting them with employee relations concerns, coaching and counseling, progressive discipline, and investigations when necessary.

Responsibilities

Employee Relations:

    Provide Employee Relations and HR Generalist support to all areas of the university.
  • Manage relationships between the university, as the employer and its employees. Point of contact and responsible for working with management to provide resolutions to work related problems including providing direction on progressive discipline process.

  • Document and investigate employee complaints and determine appropriate course of action.

  • Provide fair and consistent treatment of all employees with the goal of developing greater job commitment, productivity and engagement with specific emphasis on preventing or resolving problems arising from work situations.

  • Participates in employee disciplinary meeting, terminations and investigations.

  • Assist employees and managers in developing, maintaining and improving business relationships via communication, performance management, and dispute resolutions as well as articulating institutional policies.

  • Assist both employees and their supervisors on the interpretation and implementation of policies and procedures and how to communication effectively such as how to have difficult counseling discussions, providing constructive feedback to employees and coaching employees towards desired work behavior.

Talent Acquisition:


  • Under the supervision and guidance of the Director of Human Resources; develop and implement recruitment strategies focused on attracting and hiring diverse applicants.

  • Actively participate and partner with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion taskforce to work collaboratively on diversity sourcing initiatives.

  • Contribute to university-wide and HR specific efforts to build diverse candidate networks, community outreach and advance diversity recruitment initiatives.

  • Recruits, interviews, and facilitates the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions.

  • Collaborates with department managers to understand department needs and appropriate skills and competencies required for openings.

  • Subject matter expert with applicant tracking system iCIMS, run reports, provide metrics on vacancies, time to fill and closed positions.

  • Update and manage ATS (iCIMS) when applicable to ensure system is effective and performing well.

  • Responsible for overseeing Affirmative Action Plan including preparing reports, analyzing data and working with outside counsel on the development of Affirmative Action Plans.

Labor Relations:


  • Review, understand and keep up to date with various union collective bargaining agreements ensuring compliance with CBA's and employment policies.

  • Handle general grievance and complaints from unions as they arise.

  • Work closely with General Counsel's office on grievance procedures.

Generalist Duties:


  • Keep up to date on employment law, state and local laws that may impact HR and institutional policies.

  • Act as a backup for all Generalist duties for Jonesboro, AR campus

  • Represent HR for University Service: DEI Taskforce and various institutional committees and taskforce's

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


  • 5-7 years of progressive HR Generalist experience specifically in the areas of employee and labor relations, recruiting and diversity strategies.

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's degree preferred. Preferably in areas of Human Resources, Psychology, Industrial Organizational Psychology, or Business Administration

  • SHRM or HRCI certification highly preferred

  • Experience developing and implementing D&I recruitment strategies

  • Prior experience with Applicant Tracking Systems, iCIMS experience highly preferred.

  • Experience presenting and articulating information to internal teams including senior leadership

  • Advanced knowledge of labor markets, recruiting practices and effective social media recruiting tools.

  • Knowledge of recruiting and HR technology trends.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills

  • Advanced computer skills - ability to develop unique documents, reports and spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel.

  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism and confidentiality. Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to build effective business relationships across the campus to be a strategic partner with human capital needs.

  • *This position will be based at the NYIT Old Westbury, Long Island Campus.
