Overview:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral research associate in Quantum Computer Science who will focus on research and development activities that target languages, compilers, libraries and frameworks for heterogeneous quantum-classical computation. This position resides in the Beyond Moore Group in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our research team, you will focus on compiler research activities enabling modeling and simulation use cases that incorporate quantum co-processors. This effort seeks to develop new quantum compilation tools and techniques and will leverage existing classical high-performance computing in concert with currently available quantum processing units. The successful applicant will be at the cutting edge of quantum computer science research and lead in the development of high-performance data structures and algorithms for compilation methods enabling typical heterogeneous quantum-classical computing tasks.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

* Participate in new and ongoing research in quantum computer programming and compilation

* Design, develop, and demonstrate novel software extensions to enable quantum compilation strategies.

* Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national audiences at all levels

* Write peer-reviewed papers and technical reports for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums

Basic Qualifications:

* A PhD in quantum information, computer science, computational chemistry, physics, or other related area completed within the last 5 years

* Demonstrated written and oral communication skills

* Effective interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

* Knowledge of programming languages and methods

* Knowledge of LLVM, Clang, and MLIR

* Knowledge of quantum information science

* An excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals

* Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to a scientific audience

* Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and multi-disciplinary teams of researchers

* Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
