The Manager, Strategic & New Business Developmentis responsible for leading end-to-end sourcing, structuring, negotiation and execution of investments, as well as post-close activities to support business development, governance and reporting. This role will be a high visibility role, leading discussions and negotiations with start-up Founders/CEOs, and functional leaders and C-suite at Delta Dental to drive our investments & build a strategic portfolio that can help Delta Dental accelerate innovation both within the company and across the oral health landscape.

How you will make an impact:


  • Leads and manages all aspects of the deal process, including sourcing, qualification, investment rationale, financial modeling, due diligence, term negotiations and closing & partnership integration kick-off.

  • Leads and manages cross-Enterprise as part of the working deal team with Finance and Legal within Delta Dental as well as third party firms supporting diligence; along with serving as primary point of contact to target company management.

  • Leads key qualitative (strategic development, competitive landscaping, market analysis) and quantitative (financial modeling, portfolio reporting, valuation) analysis in support of deals and portfolio management.

  • Creates and presents investment decks, models, and governance and investment performance reports to senior leadership and C-suite investment committee.

  • Acts diligently in a Board observer capacity as part of managing portfolio company relationships, our strategic interests and governance of our investments.

  • Manages other analyst(s) on the team and leads them on investment / project basis as part of fluid team structures.

  • Leads reporting to the Investment Committee comprising of members of our executive leadership team.

  • Researches and develops intelligence on emerging trends and disruptive companies in and around our strategic focus areas, adjacencies, etc.

  • Generates high quality deal flow by proactively identifying investment opportunities through outbound calling in pre-defined market spaces and newly discovered segments and technologies.

  • Develops background research on start-ups seeking investment from external outreach as well as inbound requests and presents select opportunities to senior leadership and investment committee.

What we look for:


  • A minimum of 5-7 years of related experience in Venture Capital, Corporate Development, Private Equity and/or Investment Banking.

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • 1+ years of supervisory/management experience.


  • End-to-end execution and management of complex deals which require exploring different deal structures, valuation evaluation for early stage companies, ownership dilution assessments, etc.

  • Excellent communication and experience working with external executives that are typically company founders / CEOs.

  • Ability to both lead and support is important - individual must be able to collaborate well with others on a project or to drive independent analysis.

  • Effectively lead, manage and prioritize multiple projects at once (deals, partnerships, research).

  • Ability to influence and communicate effectively across all levels and teams within the organization internally.

  • Strong analytical skills, perform financial diligence, valuation and broad quantitative analyses and familiarity with accounting & key operational metrics.

  • Curiosity about new technologies, markets, business models, and teams.
