GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor and the Technical Director of the Immunopathology Unit, the technologist is responsible for performing moderate to high complexity assays for the detection of ANCA (Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies) in the serum of patients suspected of having granulomatosis with polyangiitis or other related forms of vasculitis. The diagnostic information provided is used by clinicians for the treatment and patient care decisions and management.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Medical Technologist I is responsible for the following:

Performing indirect immunofluorescence and ELISA (immunoassay) for detection of circulating autoantibodies such as ANCA (anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies) which are associated with life threatening diseases and syndromes that involve the lung and kidney.

Following laboratory technical protocols and procedures including safe handling of specimens for testing, analysis and results reporting; maintains quality control records.

The isolation of neutrophils from normal buffy coats and prepares cytosmears used as the cell substrate in indirect immunofluorescence testing.

The isolation of proteinase-3 (p-29), one of the antigens in the immunoassay (ELISA) that ANCA antibodies recognize, using affinity column chromatography techniques and prepares antigen coated ELISA plates for diagnostic testing.

Coating microtiter plates with antigens, blocks plates and performs the indirect or direct ELISA assay. Washes plates, develops in enzyme substrate and reads optical densities using ELISA plate reader. Aliquots positive sera and freezes them after assay is performed for subsequent follow up testing.

Referring problems and unusual assay results to the Senior Medical Technologist or Supervisor when necessary.

Performing CoPath inquiries for determining previous positive patients with ANCA results that have follow up specimens for treatment decisions.

Maintaining quality control records, documentation of assay validation including calibration documentation and instrument maintenance.

Performing clerical and support functions as required.

Responding to customer needs.

Particpating in laboratory developed internal proficiency testing for ANCA assays.

Particpating in continuing medical education programs.

Helping to maintaning adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents.

Performing and maintaining accurate records of instrument maintenance and validation.

Helping to maintain quality control logs including temperature of refrigerators, freezers, and laboratory equipment.

Due to workload of the diagnostic ANCA specimens and for the isolation of antigen needed for assays may be required to work overtime occasionally.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

-Possess a level of analytical ability and judgment

-Familiarity with immunology and the metric system.

-Computer literate and ability to use Microsoft Office Programs

-Knowledge of chemistry; familiarity with the concepts of molarity, normality, molecular weight, formula weight of chemicals.

-Familiarity with making dilutions from stock solutions.

-Knowledge of good laboratory technique. Must be able to do mathematical calculations, and read/write English. ---Must know proper handling procedure of chemicals and sterile tissue culture technique.

-Good interpersonal and communication skills in order to interact effectively with individuals in the lab, department, and hospital..

-Attention to detail and written protocols

-Must be organized and capable of following protocols and have ability to devise or adapt techniques if needed to achieve desired goals.

-Teaching skills may be required to instruct technologist or residents. Good hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity.

-Must be able to work well with others.

Professionalism and must have neat and orderly work habits.

Required to have good customer skills for users of the diagnostic testing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

May be exposed to infectious specimens, hazardous chemicals or fumes, other hazards normally associated with a clinical laboratory setting. Work environment may be noisy or crowded.


Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

BS or BA. in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science and with ASCP Certification or Certification eligible.

*** If candidate has already obtained their ASCP, they will be brought in at the"Medical Technologist II" level AND at a higher payrate!!! ***
