Job Description:

Situation in organization: Position reports directly to Plant Manager

Job dimensions:

This job exists to lead the plant level improvement process by evaluating existing improvement opportunities, analyzing data and business trends to discover new project/process opportunities, and implementing those projects to realize the gains to the benefit of the organization.

Activities:

Key job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

60% - CAPEX


  • Be the owner of plant capital projects, projects budgets and project records. Maintain 3-5 year future plan data base for capital projects. Work with the ACR Capital Coordinator on maintaining the 5 year capital plan.

  • Provide engineering support in the design, operation, and maintenance of plant processes, equipment, facilities, and Mechanical Integrity initiative.

  • Maintain and update all P&IDs, drawings, flow diagrams, and plant equipment inspections affected by CapEx project modifications. Conduct and/or participate in all MOC as required by this role.

  • Support plant operations to insure effective implementation of business-supported projects as identified in the technology plan.

  • Identify technology gaps, improvement opportunities and potential liabilities of plant for future project planning - for example: batch cycle time reductions.

  • Work with exterior entities (i.e. construction contractors, government agencies, Arkema corporate purchasing, and consultants) as needed for project work.

25% - PROCESS AUTOMATION


  • Participate in America's business and automation engineering network group meetings.

  • Assist in managing plant assets, expense projects and asset utilization initiatives.

  • Provide support to plant operations and production with issues related to DCS and PLC systems after basic diagnosis is completed.

15% - HES & ON-CALL SUPPORT


  • Process Safety Management: Have a working knowledge of the standard and assist in resolving issues identified in internal and external audits, and document review for continuous improvement of the implementation. Participate in Process Hazard Analyses, Process Safety Startup Reviews, and participate as requested in Incident Investigations.

  • Assist Plant Manager, Operations Manager and Maintenance Manager as needed for plant operations issues.

  • Serve as on-call technical support for operations no more than one week per month. In circumstances when other on-call technical support personnel are not available, Improvement Engineer will be asked to fill in if feasible.

  • HSEQ responsibilities: Employee is expected to maintain a healthful and safe working environment and is further expected to:
    • Meet all legal, regulatory and other *requirements of the site through general awareness and training.


    • Participate in HSEQ *activities provided by the site management. Arkema Coating Resins and Arkema, Inc.
    • Identify and communicate the potential gains and possible improvements related to the work environment and management system through employee suggestion programs, during group meetings, or through *other identified communication tools.
    • Safety: Support the Arkema culture of safety and Drive to Zero by actively participating in BBS, JSA, and hazard recognition programs.
    • Lead and manage all components in AIMS elements 4 and 7 covering the topics of Risk Assessments and CapEx purchases.
    • Report all health, safety, environmental and quality (HSEQ) near-miss, accident or injury incidents to their supervisor and the HES Coordinator or site manager through *means identified during orientation or *refresher training.
    • Remain in compliance with the *rules, *standard procedures and *work instructions related to the specific job title and site location.
    • Complete *assigned training through Arkema learning management system or attendance to assigned Web-Ex or Instructor Led Training (ILT) classes.

*Employee will be provided tools and references during orientation or during initial and refresher training to ensure his/her access to and knowledge of these expectations

Context and environment:

This is a plant-based position, location Torrance, CA.

Must be available to work a rotational on call schedule.

Accountabilities:

The improvement engineer assures plant level improvements align with the Plant Specific Technology Plan, thereby closing local performance gaps and increasing Asset Capability (AC). The improvement engineer provides plant level improvement project support, which may include fulfilling roles in the global project execution work process.

The improvement engineer requires both technical knowledge and judgment to identify, analyze, and implement solutions. Must have the ability to appropriately enlist expertise through teams, support groups, and Technology Centers to enhance problem solving.

Qualifications / experience required:

Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical, Biochemical or equivalent.

1-2 years of chemical manufacturing experience preferred.

Six Sigma certification is a plus.

Experience in manufacturing plant/process and project Engineering environment is a requirement. Experience with NG Fired Boilers, Plant Utilities Distribution Systems is a plus. Requires planning, focus on databased decision making, objective prioritizing, the ability to work with all functions, and the drive to achieve results.

HSEQ Responsibilities:


  • Comply with the HSEQ Policy.

  • Comply with Regulations, Legal and Internal Requirements as made known by the site and by the business unit (BU).

  • Comply with the rules of the specific location to which one is assigned as well as the rules set by the business unit (BU) and Arkema Inc.

  • Comply with all standard procedures and work instructions, aka SP, SOP, PWI, TM, to ensure productivity, quality assurance and cost effectiveness.

  • Review their work areas for potential losses and Report hazards to the direct supervisor.

  • Report Near Misses to the direct supervisor.

  • Report Incidents or Accidents to the direct supervisor.

  • Identify and communicate potential gains or possible improvements to the management system.
