Department Description: Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham (BID-Needham) is a licensed 58-bed acute care community hospital. BID-Needham has served residents in Needham, Newton, Dedham, Dover, Medfield, Sherborn, Wellesley, Westwood and other surrounding communities for more than 100 years. BID Needham has had a direct affiliation with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center since 2000, facilitating the clinical integration of staff and resources in emergency medicine, hospital medicine (hospitalists), cardiology, radiology, orthopaedics, pathology, as well as many surgical services and oncology housed in the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion.

Job Summary: Responsible for all aspects of procurement of supplies and services, maintenance of inventory, and distribution of supplies. Assures that the best possible pricing is attained while meeting quality expectations. Works closely with Hospital Leadership in sourcing and assessing new products. Acts as the Hospital liaison with BIDMC corporate materials management leadership and the Group Purchasing Organization. Hires and manages staff, directing and assisting as appropriate, evaluates performance and takes necessary action to assure compliance with hospital policies

Essential Responsibilities:


  1. Oversees and directs activities of staff in the purchasing, receiving, material distribution function of central supply, and the biomedical staff.

  2. Responsible for maintenance and implementation of just in time inventory system, including establishment of par levels and reordering timelines

  3. Direct staff in utilizing and leveraging technologies available to streamline the supply chain. Experience with GHX would be beneficial.

  4. Ensure the effectiveness of cost containment efforts, managing suppliers, distributors and group purchasing relationships to minimize expenses across the supply chain.

  5. Maintain a solid relationship with the Biomedical Engineering Vendor and Hospital Facilities Department. Coordinates the equipment management program, ensuring that all equipment operates properly and is maintained in compliance with the Joint Commission standards.

  6. Has the authority to direct and support managers with functional area responsibilities. Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Direct Reports: 2-3 Indirect Reports: 11-20

  7. Has full responsibility for planning, monitoring and managing department budget.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree required in Or equivalent.

  2. 1-3 years related work experience required in in a hospital or healthcare setting and 1-3 years supervisory/management experience required

  3. Strong Excel and Word skills are a must.

  4. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Meditech experience is preferred.

  2. Experience with Just in Time (JIT) inventory is preferred.

Physical Nature of the Job:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
