Position Summary

The Director of Safety, Health & Environment will partner with the Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope leadership to develop and execute a comprehensive strategy that reduces risk, engages employees, and fosters a positive safety culture. This key leadership position will have oversight for development, implementation, measuring and improvement of tools, standards, training and reporting to support our ambition of Zero Harm. In addition, the position will reinforce and ensure adoption of Safety, Health & Environmental Management system requirements across the Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope organization, while leading a small team.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Develop and lead company strategy on safety excellence through behavior-based initiatives, human and organizational performance, personal accountability and ownership of safety as a value.

  • Collaborates with leadership and functional teams to develop and implement programs, policies and procedures that instill a safety culture with active employee involvement, strong leadership, and teamwork.

  • Maintain and improve safety management systems including identifying gaps, updating content, and sharing standard methodologies. Ensure the company’s safety policies and procedures are being applied consistently.

  • Ensure safety policies are aligned with OSHA, other safety regulations, and company/CRH requirements including federal, state, and municipal safety standards.

  • Find opportunities to improve efficiency of Health & Safety. Benchmark internally and externally to identify standard methodologies and best practices. Ensure Safety Best Practices sharing between locations and company-wide.

  • Provide audit program oversight and conducts safety inspections & audits to assess compliance with SHE regulations and company requirements. Assess findings, report on progress and develop actions to drive improvement across the organization.

  • Reinforce and lead continuous improvement in company safety plans, policies, and processes to drive towards safety excellence.

  • Provide leadership in identifying and implementing digital tools and new technologies that will drive safety performance improvement.

  • Ensure safety training uses the current, best methods in delivery, knowledge retention and proficiency. Engage with business and location leadership to develop fit-for-purpose human performance solutions.

  • Lead efforts to ensure appropriate and necessary knowledge of relevant practices, procedures, tasks, requirements and adapt company standards/objectives as appropriate for each type of operation.

  • Develop, maintain, and measure progress against key performance indicators aligned with safety excellence strategy. Provide reports to leadership.

  • Champion risk reduction in critical work processes with focus on using employee driven solutions.

  • Lead company Safety Steering Committee.

  • Develop and maintain annual budget for the department.

  • Mentor and assist with professional development of the Safety staff.

Experience, skills and abilities needed for success:


  • Degree in Safety, Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Psychology, Engineering or other technical undergraduate degree.

  • Professional safety certification (CSP, CIH) is preferred

  • 10+ years progressive leadership experience in operational safety with at least 3 years leading company-wide safety program development and implementation. Significant safety management experience in an industrial setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive step-change improvement in safety performance/culture.

  • Human Performance/Behavior-based safety management system experience.

  • Proven ability to work in a matrixed organization and collaborate/influence across functional and organization levels.


  • Experience with implementing safety management systems and tools for dispersed and decentralized facilities.

  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills with a willingness to roll up your sleeves to get the job done.
