Job Summary

The Strategic Planner is responsible for leading the Global Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) process for assigned product categories as part of Owens & Minor’s Global Products Strategic Business Unit (SBU). The Strategic Planner will also lead mid to large scale supply chain improvement initiatives to help build value for the business.

Core Responsibilities


  • Lead development of strategic production plans to meet customer demand by effective coordination with cross-functional teams.


  • Identify and implement automation opportunities within day-to-day activities.


  • Effective communication to C-suite around future state of supply versus demand. 


  • Project management skills, with the ability to drive change and influence decision-making through multiple levels (Analyst, Manager, Director) of the organization is required.


  • Strong understanding of planning system functionality, planning parameters, net requirement inputs, and integration into supply chain processes.


  • Support decision making through timely and accurate reporting.


Qualifying Experience


  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required (preferably in Business, Supply Chain, Engineering, Information Technology, Logistics, or Operations). A Master’s degree or MBA is preferred.


  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in supply chain, operations, customer service and/or finance is required.


  • Experience in scenario planning is strongly preferred.


  • Proven track record of challenging the “status-quo”, visualizing potential opportunities and implementing actions to build value.


  • Proven analytical/quantitative skills are required.


  • Must demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.


  • High sense of urgency and adaptable to meet rapidly changing priorities.


  • APICS certification is preferred.


  • Understanding of end-to-end supply chain interactions and interdependencies.


  • SAP, Microsoft Access and/or SQL proficiency is strongly preferred.


  • High proficiency and advanced understanding in Microsoft Excel is required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Lead Global Monthly Supply and Demand Gap Planning process for assigned categories to align customer demand and financial requirements with manufacturing capabilities.


  • Attain and drive improvements to Key Performance Indicators, including forecast accuracy (MAPE, bias), Production Conformance, Inventory (gross dollars, $ Above Max Target), and customer service (Backorder $, Line Fill Rate).


  • Prepare the deck for the Global Exec S&OP and present performance on key metrics, insights and escalations to O&M Global Products SBU Leadership Team.


  • Lead monthly Supply Reviews for assigned plants/CM’s to ensure demand plan can be supported with the required production capacity.


  • Publish Global Aggregate Inventory and Production plan monthly per the S&OP Calendar


  • Develop and achieve annual inventory plan (in $), setting safety stock levels, managing inventory tracking processes and reconciliation (i.e. actual vs. plan), and identifying/implementing inventory reduction opportunities for products categories in scope.


  • Facilitate the development of global long-term demand and supply chain strategy for multiple product categories, partnering with Marketing, Finance and R&D to develop demand scenarios and strategies. Collaborate with Product Supply Operations team and plants on corresponding supply scenarios and strategies. Communicate and escalate concerns to management to ensure an appropriate supply chain strategy is developed.


  • Lead mid to large scale projects/initiatives to support business needs


  • Create and utilize in-depth analytical tools to support issue resolution, decision making, and execution oversight.


  • Build collaborative relationships with key stakeholders including Marketing, Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, R&D, and Quality.


  • Support and influence business planning and financial planning processes and leverage lean concepts and Six Sigma tools to develop and effectively implement advanced supply chain solutions, processes, and systems improvements.


  • Prepare related presentations for senior management with minimal coaching as required.


  • Provide thought leadership and direction to peers through training and coaching.
