JOB SUMMARY

Firefighter/Paramedics under general supervision perform fire prevention, fire suppression, hazardous material incident response and emergency rescue and Advance Life Support medical assistance duties to protect life and property; performs related responsibilities as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES

Customer Service * Participates in the Fire Department Public Education program by promoting fire safety through tours of the station, safety briefings, extinguisher classes and informational flyers.

* Work requires cooperative/supportive interaction with co-workers, supervisors, doctors and other healthcare workers.

* Work requires interaction with representatives of other City departments, other fire departments and local, state and federal agencies.

Fire Suppression

* Performs fire suppression duties by responding to emergency fire alarms for various types of fires and using appropriate extinguishing agents per the source of fire.

* Operate and inspect various pieces of fire equipment, gear and facilities for safety, fire suppression and control; drives and operates fire apparatus; search and rescue; ventilation and salvage operations.

* Provides written reports detailing specific firefighting and rescue actions taken on scene.

Emergency Medical Services

* Responds to emergency medical calls; performs primary and secondary physical assessment of ill or injured persons, providing emergency and non-emergency medical procedures both on scene and in a moving vehicle.

* Performs skilled tasks at the scenes of emergency and non-emergency calls, and transfers patients to medical facilities.

* Treat patients in accordance with established Emergency Medical Service Protocols and governing policies.

* Provide written reports detailing patient care.

* May serve as a preceptor for paramedic and EMT-B trainees.

* May from time to time be assigned primary duties as an emergency medical technician paramedic on 911 or transport ambulance.

* Under a physician's direction, provides treatment or directs response team in the administration of medications, intravenous solutions, respiratory assistance, EKG monitoring, telemetry transmissions and other life support procedures.

Communications

* Portable radios are used as a means of communication.

* Operates and inspects communication equipment.

* Must conduct all radio communications in a professional, respectful manner.

* Prepare written documents for both internal and external customers.

Maintenance

* Conduct daily and weekly vehicle and equipment inspections as assigned.

* Ensure all vehicle and equipment discrepancies are documented and reported to the on-duty Fire Captain.

* Perform daily maintenance of facilities by cleaning, inspecting, and any other facility maintenance deemed necessary.

Training

* Participate in all required training sessions, including, but not limited to; live fire drills, performance evaluation drills, ongoing skills maintenance, practice and training, annual OSHA drills, EMS major skills and any other mandatory Company training.

* Participate in continuing education along with technical and practical training to maintain competencies, skillset and certifications.

QUALIFICATIONS

* Valid driver license with acceptable driving record in accordance with company policy. DUI within last 5 years is disqualifying.

* Must be able to work any shift assigned, including nights, holidays and weekends to include scheduled and unscheduled overtime and as needed on an emergency basis.

* Must meet local standards pertaining to qualifications, training and/or eligibility for promotion or placement.

* State, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (ProBoard) certifications as a minimum: Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials-Operations

* State issued or National Registered EMT-Paramedic

* Current ACLS certification

* Current CPR certification.

For airport operations:

o Must pass airfield/customer driving test; and obtain/maintain Ramp, Apron, and Airfield driving clearances as required.

o Must pass FBI fingerprint-based criminal history records check to obtain/maintain an airport/customer security badge.

o If assigned to an airport operation - State, IFSAC, ProBoard or FAA Airport Firefighter certification.

Experience:

* Must meet local standards pertaining to qualifications, training and/or eligibility for hiring placement or promotion.

Education:

* High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Credentials/Licenses:

* State issued or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or (ProBoard) certifications as a minimum: Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials-Operations

* If assigned to an airport operation- State, (IFSAC) or (ProBoard) certification is required.

* State issued or National Registered EMT-P certification.

* Current ACLS certification

* Current AHA CPR certification.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND MENTAL/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Working Conditions:
* Work is performed primarily in an indoor office environment; Firefighting, Medical Services and Rescue duties may be performed in or outdoors in potentially adverse conditions, such as, but not limited to: extreme heat, cold, wet, humid, and loud situations.
Physical Demands:
* While performing the duties of this job, fire department personnel are frequently required to walk, sit, climb, crawl, kneel, bend, stoop, lift, talk, see, hear, feel, use clear speech and operate machinery. There is a need to reach and perform moderate (20-50 pounds) and frequent heavy (50-200 pounds) lifting during the use of tools and equipment, and while assisting others while extinguishing fires or treating ill/injured persons.
Mental Requirements:
* Work may be stressful at times. e.g., Critical thinking skills with the ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
