The State of Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is currently recruiting for a Building and Grounds Lead Patrol Officer. This is a full-time second shift position. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 3:00 p.m. - 11 p.m. You will be responsible for the supervision of staff on your shift. The DVA grounds in Rocky Hill are beautiful and stretch over 40 buildings including a veteran's home.
**This position is open to Department of Veteran Affairs employees only.
Please Note: Employees will be required to work in buildings which may have Covid-19 infected residents or patients. If required to wear N-95 respirators employees will need to be fit tested which requires no facial hair interrupting the fit of the mask. Beards and Mustaches will need to be shaved in order to be fit tested.
The Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center at the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs is a Skilled Nursing Facility licensed by the Connecticut Department of Public Health and certified by the Federal Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The Healthcare Center is also certified as a State Veterans Homes by the Federal Veterans Administration and regularly inspected by the VA. The Residential Facility is home to up to 150 veterans and a Veterans Outpatient Clinic and is under the same inspections as the Healthcare Center for licensing.

At a State institution, university or school, facility or at the State Regional Market this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for patrol officers providing basic security services designed to insure the control and safety of clients, students, employees and the visiting public.
Insures the protection of State property against trespass, theft or damage; allocates patrol and duty assignment areas to personnel; establishes work schedules for staff; inspects and evaluates performance of duties; insures correction of negligence and reports same to superior; supervises the enforcement of traffic and parking regulations established by the institution or facility assigned; keeps records and prepares reports of incidents and activities; provides first aid when necessary; performs all duties of a Buildings and Grounds Patrol Officer as required; at the State Regional Market, collects fees for stall rent from vendors at the Farmer's Market and prepares receipts of same; performs related duties as required.
Knowledge of State traffic and parking rules and regulations; knowledge of traffic control techniques; basic knowledge of physical plant security methods and techniques; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to follow written and oral instructions; some supervisory skill.
Two (2) years of experience in the protection of persons or property or in the enforcement of security regulations.
Two (2) years of experience as a Buildings and Grounds Patrol Officer or its equivalent may be substituted for the General Experience.
In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to the attendant discomforts of working outdoors and to the effort of prolonged period of walking and standing while on foot patrol and/or guard duty and to some danger of injury in performing the duties of the class.
