Health & Nutrition Coordinator

Reports to: BCFS Education Services Head Start Director
Status (Pay Grade): Exempt - Full Time (Director I)
Minimum Qualifications: Must be a licensed or certified health professional. Two (2) years of experience in serving young children and their families. Bachelor's degree. Possess a valid driver's license and work eligibility status. Pass a criminal and driving background check.
Preferred Qualifications: Registered dietician or nutritionist. Master's degree in early childhood education or related field.



Critical Action Items:

Design a health program that encompasses health assessments, designation of a medical home, and periodic observations and other appropriate strategies for program staff and parents to identify any new or recurring developmental, medical, oral, or mental health concerns. (HSPPS §1302.42. 1302.46) Facilitate further diagnostic testing, evaluation, treatment, and follow-up plan, as appropriate, by a licensed or certified professional for each child with a health problem or developmental delay. (HSPPS §1302.42) Design, implement, and monitor a high quality food program to include meal planning and requisition, family-style dining and other strategies, and outreach for at-home nutrition. (HSPPS §1302.44) Provide training and technical assistance for program staff on health and nutrition services in accordance with state and federal regulations (e.g., completion of assessments, accessing sources of care and/or health insurance). (HSPPS §1302.42) Ensure appropriate practices to keep children safe during all activities, including reporting at a minimum suspected or known child abuse and neglect, appropriate supervision of children at all times; and all standards of conduct. (HSPPS §1302.17, 1302.90) Support staff development, including completion of minimum training requirements as specified in state and federal standards (HSPPS §1302.92), through the development staff wellness initiatives.



Other Responsibilities:

Develop and monitor compliance of child health data, including compliance with confidentiality. Assess satisfaction with nutrition services. Contribute to Individual Family Service Plan (FSP) and Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, home visits, and parent conferences as needed. Build community partnerships to facilitate access to additional health and nutrition resources and services, as needed. Assist with referrals to outside agencies for children with health and nutrition needs as requested. Assist staff in interpreting and meeting health, sanitation and safety standards. Serve as a resource for health and nutrition content areas, providing subject matter expertise, direction, and/or guidance as needed. Support community recruitment, outreach, and engagement events. Support development of community and self-assessments, grant applications, budgets, and required reports in accordance with BCFS Education Services and Office of Head Start timelines and criteria for composition. Perform other job duties as assigned.



Measurable Deliverables:

Assessments are completed according to parameters and timeframes specified in agency, state, and federal policy and regulations. Child health records are current, organized, complete, and compliant. Program nutrition services comply with Head Start Program Performance Standards, USDA requirements, and licensing standards. Required reports are prepared and submitted prior to deadlines.



Requirements:

Knowledge of applicable state and federal Head Start regulations, performance standards and guidelines, including but not limited to Head Start Program Performance Standards, Child and Adult Care Food Program requirements, and Texas Department of Agriculture standards and/or Texas Department of Family and Protective Services licensing regulations. Knowledge of the principles, practice, and procedures of health program administration. Knowledge of health resources available within the community, state and federal government. Demonstrated proficiency in collecting data, preparing reports, monitoring progress and analyzing data. Strong written and oral communication skills to communicate with a diverse audience (e.g., students, parents, teaching staff, program staff, and community partners), including individuals with low health literacy. Sound judgment in the protection of confidential information. Ability to organize and prioritize duties and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, holidays, and weekends. Ability to work independently. Possess sensitivity to the service population's cultural and socio-economic characteristics.
