The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University's second largest population of students, faculty and staff. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being. The incumbent will join the microbial food and beverage lab testing food and beverages for shelf-life. This lab aims to provide education, outreach, and technical services to the growing Small Scale Food Entrepreneurs in New York State and beyond. Technical services, including fee for service analysis of foods and beverages are performed in support of the producer, manufacturer, and co-packer seeking to evaluate the quality of their products. In addition, the incumbent will assist with applied research projects and support student researchers. The incumbent will also provide extension and outreach support.
The incumbent will assist in laboratory analysis under the supervision of the lab manager, and provide research and extension support. Specific responsibilities will include: 1) all sample prep and analysis requiring adequate degree of proficiency, 2) operate many different machines and equipment, including but not limited to, Hiperbaric 55L High Pressure Processing unit, HPLC, Sensovation, Thermal Cycler, CiderSure 3500, Stomacher, Autoclave, 3) prepare standard and non-standard stains, media, buffers and reagents, 4) collect data and maintain accurate electronic and written records, 5) maintain a clean, efficient, and safe work environment, 6) dispose of research waste, 7) liaison with other technical staff, students, and collaborating companies, 8) perform library and/or internet research, 9) assist in evaluating lab methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives, 10) maintain inventory and order or coordinate supplies procurement in partnership with business service center, 11) communicate with clients, schedule, setup and keep track of experiments, 12) work with BSL2 pathogens, and 13) be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
The incumbent will contribute to the organization of the laboratories used by the team, assist with ensuring compliance with safety and health guidelines, and handle sensitive/confidential material in a professional manner. Once established, the incumbent will ensure that less experienced lab personnel adhere to all laboratory safety protocol.
The position is a full-time, one-year term appointment, with possibility of extension dependent on performance and funding.
