Basic Function:

Utilizing optical engineering design theory, and knowledge of diode pumped solid state laser systems, the Sr. Laser Engineer develops and implements production processes, manufacturing material flow, build methods, and other critical product documentation related to the fabrication and testing of high power laser diode modules; estimates manufacturing costs, determines cycle times, and makes recommendations for manufacturing tooling; is responsible for releasing new parts, components, subassemblies, and final assemblies; constructs and helps maintain the product BOM.

The Sr. Laser Engineer interfaces with the R&D, product-development, and the manufacturing teams to coordinate the release of new laser products. Applies a wide range of technical principles, theories and concepts from disciplines associated with thermal, laser and optical sciences.

The Sr. Laser Engineer conceptualizes designs, develops, and fabricates testing and alignment stations/equipment for complex and precision optical laser systems and subsystems to ensure correct measurements per company/customer specifications. Determines best methodology, materials and tools necessary for each system.

Assists with the development and implementation of new laser module testing, assembly, and alignment processes. Introduces processes into manufacturing when necessary. Provides processes that are robust and repeatable against product specifications and that support the quoted cost. Works with Manufacturing to improve and streamline existing processes for increased accuracy and efficiencies.

Designs and conducts well thought out laser hardware experiments under the direction of senior staff to characterize and define the design trade-space. Prepares high quality briefings and technical reports summarizing work to be reviewed and assessed for quality by senior level program staff.

Education:

BS Engineering or related discipline.

Work Experience:

20+ years of experience can be substituted for degree.

Strong knowledge of diode pumped high energy solid state laser theory.

Prior hands-on experience working with high energy lasers.

Strong knowledge of laser diagnostics and diagnostic instrumentation.

Knowledge of optical theory, optical design, interferometric methods, encircled energy, point spread function measurement required.

Prior hands-on experience building, testing and troubleshooting laser test and alignment stations.

Experience in the application and use of sophisticated analytical techniques and tools.

Strong analytical, fault isolation, and problem solving skills. Proven ability to provide innovative designs and solutions to reach desired outcomes.

Experience with problem analysis and resolution

Demonstrated ability to achieve results independently or working with others

Ability to recommend and implement improvements

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Experience with networked PC based computer system (MS Office, spreadsheets, access, graphics, Email, MRP systems, and accounting software)

Skills:

Ability to handle multiple priorities involving external and internal priorities

Ability to excel in a cross-organizational, cross cultural, global team environment

Handle special assignments promptly and professionally

Set a high standard of ethics, professionalism, leadership, and competency

Physical requirements of the job require the ability to stand for long periods of time, reaching, stretching, bending, grasping and turning. Assemblies and systems range in weight and size; may be required to lift/manipulate/carry up to 30 lbs. Must be able to wear protective/clean room gear for prolonged periods of time. Work is performed in both a lab/test area and office environment.
