II-VI Aerospace & Defense designs, manufactures, assembles and tests precision optical systems and components. Our products have been deployed on military platforms such as submarines, tanks, missiles, fighter jets and UAV's. II-VI Optical Systems has grown over the years from a provider of specialty optical materials to a full service provider of optical components and optical systems.

Basic Function:

Vacuum System Maintenance: Conduct diagnostic routines and repair of vacuum chambers, mechanical, and electronic/electrical equipment in the Coating department. Perform preventative maintenance routines for all aspects of coating equipment to drive machine availability time upwards.

Coating Clean-Room Maintenance: Help in maintaining, and up-grading of the clean-room, product cleaning room, including sinks, water delivery systems and baths. Assist in cleaning of all areas including service core and facilities support areas.

Engineering Assistance: The Coating Maintenance Engineering Tech. shall work with Coating Engineers and Management to conceptualize, design, manufacture, and install new equipment, upgraded equipment, processes and procedures. Initiate improvements to the periodic maintenance program. These efforts are designed to increase production quantity, increase quality, and overall increase profitability of II-VI Aerospace & Defense.

Personnel Development: The Coating Maintenance Engineering Tech. shall provide guidance and training to Coating Maintenance personnel, provide constructive feedback through coaching and mentoring, provide administrative support to Coating management, and promote positive work relationships among all the shifts and with other departments. Utilize continuing education to stay abreast of technology and techniques.

Job Requirements:

Education/Work Experience:

AAS degree / Technical school training / Military training or equivalent. Directly related technical and on the job training 10 15+ years.

Skills/Knowledge:


  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Strong organization and planning skills. Must maintain concise written records.
  • Ability to interpret and generate drawings, standard maintenance procedures, work instructions, safety procedures, and equipment manuals.
  • Strong knowledge of thin film coating equipment, processes, materials, and methodology.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in leak checking vacuum systems of specialized coating equipment, and instruments specific to A&D products and process technology.

Manufacturing Maintenance Engineering:

  • Proven record in leading team projects involving design, redesign of coating equipment, including new installation, or moving of existing installed equipment. Projects designed to reduce down time.

Reasoning skills:

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Leadership skills:

  • Ability to lead team maintenance procedures utilizing the A&D facilities maintenance personnel.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities involving external and internal priorities.
  • Ability to excel in a cross-organizational, cross cultural, global team environment.
  • Handle special assignments promptly and professionally.
  • Set a high standard of ethics, professionalism, leadership, and competency.
