Research Support Specialist I, Band E

The Tata-Cornell Agriculture and Nutrition Institute (TCI), is a long-term research initiative focused on solving problems of poverty, malnutrition, and rural development in India, with offices in Ithaca, New York, and in Mumbai and Delhi, India. TCI was established with a generous gift from the Tata Trust to conduct multidisciplinary research, and to facilitate research grants and fellowships to prominent student and professional researchers at Cornell, in India, and across the globe. The TCI team works alongside partner institutions in India and globally to address the agriculture-nutrition nexus.

TCI is searching for a Research Support Specialist, to fill a one-year appointment, in their Ithaca, New York office, to support the Director's research initiatives and to support a Walmart Foundation funded project on Farmer Producer Organizations.

The successful candidate will devote 50% of their effort to support the TCI Director by:


  • Writing research reports; reviewing research literature; conducting library/internet searches; and selecting/recommending collected research data/information in accordance with research assignment.

  • Coordinating the collection, preparation, verification, and analysis of moderately complex data; and researching, graphing, and mapping moderately complex data.

  • Assembling relevant literature on agriculture and nutrition in India.

  • Assisting with preparation of research reports and PowerPoint Presentations for TCI seminars/presentations, etc.

They will devote 50% of their effort to TCI's Walmart Foundation project on Farmer Producer Organizations by:


  • Cleaning and analyzing data.

  • Writing research reports; reviewing research literature; conducting library/internet searches; and selecting/recommending collected research data/information.

  • Summarizing and synthesizing literature on agriculture and its relationship to smallholder market access.

  • Coordinating the collection, preparation, verification, and analysis of moderately complex data; and researching, graphing, and mapping moderately complex data.

  • Assembling relevant literature on agricultural development in the context of smallholder agricultural producers in developing countries.

  • Assisting Assistant Director, Mathew Abraham, in preparing research reports and presentations.

Required Qualifications: Specify required minimum equivalency for education, experience, skills, information systems knowledge, etc.


  • Bachelor's degree in applied economics, nutrition, or food policy with two years of experience.

  • Ability to create an inclusive high quality and respectful work environment.

  • Ability to consistently exercise sound and ethical judgment when working on behalf of TCI and Cornell University.

  • Strong knowledge of economic and social developments processes of South Asia.

  • Solid understanding of the research process, and possess related skills, tools, techniques, and formal approaches.

  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, written and oral communication skills. Must be comfortable with public speaking and building relationships. Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of constituents.

  • Strong orientation to detail, quantitative analysis, and problem solving.

  • Personable, flexible, and in possession of excellent organizational and communications skills (both written and oral).

  • Proven track record of rapidly establishing credibility that would enable the effective establishment of critical relationships with outside constituencies.

  • Proven proficiency in MS Office and statistical software.

Preferred Qualifications: Specify preferred specialized education, field and/or certifications.


  • Master's degree in applied economics, public policy, international development, nutrition or related field.

  • Prior experience in international development context and/or fieldwork in resource-limited settings is desirable.

  • Topical knowledge of working on smallholder aggregation models in developing countries.

This is a one-year term position.
