New York Tech seeks a Senior Technician for the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at the Long Island, NY (Old Westbury) campus.

Responsibilities

    Manages the day-to-day operations of the science lab and train and Supervise Chemistry faculty on proper lab procedure, hazardous material handling and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Oversees and assist as necessary in the preparation of lab materials requested by faculty teaching per semester for all chemistry lab classes; chemicals, solution and supplies laboratory equipment.

  • Maintains and secures lab supplies and chemicals, researches new products and coordinates the purchase with vendors; maintains appropriate inventory of all physical and chemical supplies and eliminating obsolete supplies.

  • Prepares chemical solutions for Chemistry classes as needed.

  • Coverage of labs for absent instructors when needed. Assist and instruct student: setting up experiments and other learning exercises, and with the use of equipment and materials. Prepare and Assist with and answer questions on the preparation of all Chemistry labs.

  • Develop, update and assist with the enforcement and implementation of laboratory policies and procedures in cooperation with EH&S, including OSHA compliancy; ensures updated Material Safety Data Sheets are readily available. Act as a liaison between the office of EH&S and the department.

  • Responsible for preparation of an annual chemical and equipment inventory to be submitted to the Environmental Health & Services (EH&S), and the Department Chair.

  • Maintain all equipment and arrange for professional service when necessary.

  • Maintain Certifications; Hazardous Waste Training & Operations (NYIT165) in compliance with 29 CFR 1910.120e8 and Hazardous Waste Management Training (CO58230) in compliance with 40 CFR 265.16.

  • Supervises and manages the schedules and activities of the other laboratory technicians.

  • Coordinate with adjunct faculty to ensure that all biology teaching laboratories run timely and efficiently.

  • Required to teach, especially laboratory based courses.

Qualifications


  • A Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Biology is required.

  • Required certification in 40 Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, 29 CFR 1910.120e8:Annual 8 hour refresher(NYIT165).

  • Preferred certification in Hazardous Waste Management Training, 40 CFR 265.16: Certificate #CO58230.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Must be able to work collaboratively and independently.

  • Must have knowledge of the most recent safety standards provided by EH&S.

  • Basic computer skills are required.
