Position Summary


Mission:

To safely operate Vacuum Induction Melt, Vacuum Arc Melt and Air Induction Melt casting processes in order to achieve plant quality, productivity, and thru-put goals. To follow all process control procedures, standard operating procedures and technique card work instructions to insure the highest quality castings are produced.

Principal Accountabilities:


  1. Casting and Mold Preparation:

Objective: Prepare schedules, equipment, metal and molds prior to furnace operation.

Essential Job Functions:


  1. Create/follow the written furnace plan.

  2. Review casting schedules; communicate requirements with Supervisor and Shell Finishing Leads.

  3. Verifies that shell identification and metal assignments agree with casting schedule and technique card.

  4. Inspects and cleans shells in preparation for casting.

  5. Installs fixtures, insulation, filters, tundish and covers per technique card and SOP's.

  6. Loads and fires burnout furnaces, prepares maps and monitors cycles for proper operation and repair.

  7. Change pots, leads, furnace oil as indicated for proper operation

  8. Documents work performed in logs.

  9. Verifies weights and loads metal alloy charges.


  1. Furnace Operation:

Objective: Efficiently melt and pour alloys into molds, according to all applicable procedures and work instructions.

Essential Job Functions:


  1. Checks vacuum levels, power supply, hydraulics and other furnace systems for proper operation.

  2. Operates equipment including induction melting, arc melting, vacuum systems hydraulic systems, doors, cranes and hoists.

  3. Maintains process control parameters and records during melting and casting.

  4. Performs and records calibrations.

  5. Operates computer systems.

  6. Transfers hot molds from burnout to casting furnaces.

  7. Document observations using PVN & Casting Feedback Forms as required.


  1. Maintenance:

Objective: To maintain furnaces and support equipment to minimize downtime and cost while optimizing furnace performance.

Essential Job Functions:


  1. Clean furnace and casting equipment as required.

  2. Maintain clean, organized work area.

  3. Perform regular maintenance, calibrations and preventive maintenance on equipment as required.

  4. Troubleshoot furnace problems and assist Maintenance Department with repairs.

  5. Record equipment performance, identify changes and initiate corrections.



  1. Pot Packing

Objective: To properly install ceramic crucibles.

Essential Job Functions:


  1. Reviews daily schedule for crucibles required.

  2. Maintains inventory of crucibles and packing materials.

  3. Removes crucibles after multiple heats.

  4. Installs and packs new crucibles.

  5. Maintains an orderly pot packing area.

  6. Visually inspects box and coils for damage.



  1. Coil Maintenance

Objective: To install coils in air and vacuum furnaces, and maintain coil and frame equipment.

Essential Job Functions:


  1. Delivers coils to furnaces; installs as needed.

  2. Inspects coil and frame equipment.

  3. Repairs and maintains coil and frame equipment.

  4. Coordinates availability of coil supplies and equipment.

  5. Orders coil supplies and equipment.


  1. Safety:

Objective: To take responsibility for and demonstrate safe work practices.

Essential Job Functions:


  1. Wears all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  2. Adheres to plant and department safety rules.

  3. Safely operates all equipment and tools.

  4. Identifies and reports safety problems.

  5. Performs Safety Audits as directed.

  6. Promote safe practices, equipment and facilities by example and methods development.

NOTE: for job positions that require respiratory protection (more than a filtering face piece - dust mask):

In compliance with the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division Personal Protective Equipment standard for Respiratory Protection, OAR 437, Div. 2/I 1910.134 and Oregon Health Division Rules for the Control of Radiation, OAR 333. Div. 120 (333-120-300 through 330), certain tasks within this job position require/may require the use of a NIOSH-approved respirator. An individual will not be assigned to these tasks if the person is not able to work under these conditions. Respirator selection will be based on the work performed, exposure information, duration of use and any other relevant factors. If a tight-fitting respirator is required, facial hair, temple pieces on glasses or other items that interferes with the face-to-face piece seal of the respirator are not permitted.

Additional Accountabilities:


  1. Trains and certifies in each method as outlined in the Step Progression Record.

  2. Identifies problems and opportunities and works with Supervision, Process Control, Engineering and Maintenance to implement solutions.

  3. Maintain accurate logs, production reports and process control records.

  4. Participate in audits, casting trials and process improvement activities.

  5. Provide work direction, training and working supervision to others as assigned.

  6. Delivers cast shells to Cleaning department.

  7. Promote teamwork.

  8. Performs other tasks as directed.

Essential Equipment Used:


  1. Induction and Arc melting furnaces.

  2. Vacuum, hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical systems.

  3. Burnout furnaces.

  4. Thermocouples and pyrometers.

  5. Alloy verification equipment.

  6. Hoists, cranes and Ergo-lift devices.

  7. Data acquisition systems.

  8. Electronite lance

  9. Casting fixtures

  10. Argon, nitrogen, and hexamine supply lines

  11. Pot pre-heaters and conditioners.

  12. Fixtures and lifting devices.

  13. Powered conveyors.

  14. Basic hand tools (wrenches, chisels, etc).

  15. Pneumatic tools and chipping guns.

Training:


  1. Training is provided on the job.

  2. Certification in training modules and time on the job with acceptable performance is required for step advancement based on the most current Step Progression Record.

  3. PCC Forklift Driving Safety Certification Training must be completed and license renewed as required.

  4. May be required to complete Hazardous Waste Management Training.

Qualifications:


  1. Working knowledge of foundry operations, as demonstrated by experience as Foundry Person and / or Furnace Operator.

  2. Ability to read, understand and follow Technique Cards, Process Control procedures and Standard Operating Procedures.

  3. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with high accuracy (add, subtract, multiply, divide, and percentages).

  4. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  5. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision while contributing ideas and suggestions in a team environment.

  6. Ability to provide work direction and coordinate the work of others in a team.

  7. Physical ability to perform the essential job functions in a hot environment.

  8. Basic knowledge of the properties of alloys preferred.
