Type: Full-Time

Job Description:

Nature Research is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.

Locum Associate or Senior Editor, Nature Astronomy

Locations: London, Berlin, New York or Shanghai

Closing date: August 6th 2021

Nature Astronomy — a prestigious international online journal covering all areas of astronomy, astrophysics and planetary sciences is seeking a Locum Associate or Senior Editor to join its editorial team to work on all aspects of the journal. This role is covering a secondment and is available until mid-September 2022.

The ideal candidate should have a PhD (or equivalent) and preferably postdoctoral experience, and should be able to demonstrate a general interest in other areas of research beyond their own. Editorial experience would be beneficial, but is not required, as we provide full training; candidates with substantial editorial experience will be considered for Senior Editor.

We are particularly keen to hear from applicants with expertise in extragalactic astronomy, theoretical astrophysics or cosmology, but welcome keen candidates in all areas of astronomy. We especially encourage candidates from underrepresented communities to apply.

The successful candidate will play an important role in determining the representation of the fields they handle for the journal, and will work closely within a team of editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, management of the peer review process, commissioning and editing of reviews and comment, and writing for the journal. An interest in engaging with topical issues for the scientific community, such as on diversity, equity and inclusion in astronomy, would be welcome.

Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills and a keen interest in the practice and communication of science are a prerequisite. The successful candidate must be an enthusiastic communicator, have excellent interpersonal skills and be prepared to liaise with their community of researchers through conference attendance and lab visits, via remote calls and on-site visits when permitted.

The position is open to our offices in London, Berlin, New York or Shanghai of Springer Nature. All employees are currently working remotely but the successful applicant will be required to be based in the office, once offices re-open in line with our working from home policy.

Applications should include the following:

1. A cover letter telling us who you are and why you want to leave research to become a full-time Nature journal editor, as well as your salary expectation, notice period and preferred office of employment.

2. A CV detailing your education, relevant employment history, list of published scientific papers, and any other achievements that you feel demonstrate your suitability for the position.

3. A 300-word Research Highlight in the style of Nature Astronomy (see www.nature.com/natastron) on a peer-reviewed research paper that has caught your attention recently. The paper you highlight should not be from your own (or previous) research group, but should be on a topic that you find interesting (and might even wish to learn more about). The Highlight should explain the significance and implications of the research to someone who is not a specialist in the subject.

The Nature Astronomy team is part of a dynamic editorial and publishing environment that also includes Nature, Nature Geoscience, Nature Physics and Nature Communications. For more information about the journal, visit our website at www.nature.com/natastron.
