The Role

Reporting to the Health Safety & Environmental Manager, you will be proving exemplary customer service to our clients. As part of your specific responsibilities, in the following areas, you will:


  • Promote the safety culture by exemplifying safety leadership to all levels of the organization, enforcing safety procedures and policies in a consistent manner.

  • Participate in planning meetings ("pre-jobs") for capital projects and maintenance activities to identify hazards and appropriate control measures.

  • Assess, prepare and monitor work permits (Hot Work, Confined Space) with the self-reliance to STOP unsafe work, re-group and find solutions to mitigate unsafe work and/or hazards.

  • Administer first aid and CPR to injured personnel.

  • Oversee maintenance and inspection of fire and other essential safety equipment.

  • Perform and/or coordinate safety audits.

  • Develop, implement, deliver and/or coordinate health and safety training.

  • Perform and/or coordinate accident root cause investigations.

  • Develop and implement new health and safety programs to meet corporate objectives and ensure continuous improvement of safety awareness and culture.

  • Cross train with other department personnel, providing back up as needed.

  • Monitor compliance with all federal, state and company standards.

  • Perform incipient firefighting response and have knowledge in defensive firefighting strategies and tactics.

  • Depending on experience and capabilities, coordinate and lead development, training, and deployment of the Emergency Response Team.

The Requirements

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. To be a good fit for the Safety Specialist opportunity, you will have:


  • 5-10 years industrial health or safety professional experience with good working knowledge of general health and safety laws (OSHA).

  • Direct Experience with Washington Labor and Industries regulations preferred.

  • Experience in the refining or chemical processing industry is highly desirable as is experience in emergency response including firefighting.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with all levels of the organization. Able to perform 1-on-1 or small group format training.

  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines. Able to adapt to changes and changing priorities.

  • Good computer skills with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and ability to utilize/maintain electronic databases.
