Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Mission Support/Assurance group is seeking forward-thinking, professionals interested in exploring a career as a Lead Nuclear Safety Inspector (LNSI)!

As a Lead Nuclear Safety Inspector in the INL Office of Nuclear Assurance (ONA), this position provides independent inspection of INL Nuclear Facilities (ATR, ATR-C, MFC, and associated facilities) by conducting oversight, performing nuclear safety analyses, reviewing and recommending nuclear safety authorization bases changes for approval. Inspection efforts also include sampling of facility hazard categorizations for conformance to applicable Department of Energy (DOE) regulations and inspections of the adequacy of line organization documentation that supports nuclear safety operations at INL. The LNSI reviews operating event timelines and causal evaluations developed by the line organizations to ensure the causes of operating events are identified and actions to prevent recurrence are appropriate and timely implemented. The position provides support for preparation of nuclear safety standards at INL.

Additional responsibilities include:


  • Identifying and developing performance trends through utilization of line organization's corrective action documentation, event reports, incident reports, and other applicable source documents.

  • Maintaining an awareness of Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) lessons learned documentation and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Information Notices in the areas of both equipment and human performance is an expectation of this position.

  • Develop metrics to assess nuclear safety performance, inspection procedures, assessments, support for preparation of nuclear safety standards, and other duties as assigned by the Manager of ONA.

  • Establish objectives, sets priorities, and advise INL senior management regarding nuclear safety issues.

  • Develops and maintain effective communication with facility operations, supporting organizations, and DOE field office/headquarters personnel.

  • Subject matter expertise in strategic areas to facilitate accomplishing the Laboratory's mission in an effective and efficient manner, as determined by the Manager of ONA.

Minimum Requirements:


  • Bachelors plus 8 years related experience, or Advanced Degree and 6 years related experience

  • 5 years in nuclear facility operations including reactor facilities experience or support activities

  • Demonstrated expertise in verbal and written communications

Preferred Requirements:


  • Working level knowledge of DOE nuclear safety and criticality safety requirements, standards, and guides

  • Previous experience or demonstrated ability to master like requirements in the commercial nuclear industry or NRC

  • Experience as an NRC Senior Resident Inspector or qualified Inspector, Shift Manager in a commercial power plant, or equivalent
