IE&A Engineer

Situation in organization

This position is in the Maintenance & Reliability Department and reports directly to the Maintenance & Reliability Manager.

Job dimensions

The IE&A Engineer will manage the IE&A maintenance/reliability initiatives and interface with the appropriate maintenance and manufacturing groups to ensure the highest level of safety, productivity, work quality and reliability for all instrumentation, electrical and analyzer maintenance/reliability activities.

Key Activities and responsibilities


  • Oversee troubleshooting, repairs, calibration, and new installation tasks for instrumentation work - 25%

    • Drive instrumentation reliability by reviewing recent failures and past history to provide recommendations for improvement

    • Analyze bad actors and Top 10's to drive improvements for instrumentation

    • Develops and implements instrumentation safety and skills training for Maintenance personnel

    • Contribute in the ongoing development of instrumentation standards that will maximize reliability, efficiency, design, and minimize required spare parts inventory

    • Identify capital projects necessary to maintain and improve the plant instrumentation. Submit project requests to Project Engineering and assist in implementation of the project.

    • Assist IE&A Superintendent and Technicians in troubleshooting instrumentation issues.



  • Oversee troubleshooting, repairs, switching, isolation, and new installation tasks for electrical work - 60%

    • Ensures the reliability of the plant electrical distribution system by developing and implementing an Electrical Preventive Maintenance (EPM) program. Surveys and analysis consistent with industry best practices are employed.

    • Plan and direct plant power outages that support the EPM program. Assure that the necessary internal and external resources are identified to support the planned work.

    • Work with site energy leader/team to improve energy efficiency.

    • Assist IE&A Superintendent and Technicians in troubleshooting electrical issues.

    • Identify capital projects necessary to maintain and improve the plant electrical infrastructure. Submit project requests to Project Engineering and assist in implementation of the project.

    • Collaborate with Operations supervision to improve existing process operations and reliability

    • Contribute in the ongoing development of electrical standards that will maximize reliability, efficiency, design, and minimize required spare parts inventory

    • Develops and implements electrical safety and skills training for Maintenance personnel

    • Ensure proper operation and preventive maintenance of plant emergency generators



  • Oversee troubleshooting, repairs, calibration, and new installation tasks for analyzer work- 15%

Other Duties as Assigned:


  • Attend meetings (safety, maintenance planning, reliability, and production)

  • Monitor IE&A maintenance spend

  • Lead Root Cause Failure Analysis and Incident Investigations

  • Perform cost analysis for repair versus replacement of equipment

  • Analyze IE&A problems when they arise and find effective solutions

  • Ensures that IE&A equipment and spare parts are ordered as needed and validate spare parts are maintained appropriately

  • Manage the quality and cost associated with IE&A work performed by outside repair shops

  • Publish monthly reports for management pertaining to productivity, equipment repair status, project status, reliability and forecasting

  • Must adhere to the Arkema Electrical Safe Work Practices Policy and Guidelines for the CLO site

  • Must be available to work extended hours, weekends, holidays and after hour

  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements

  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)

  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents

  • Understands and Supports the Clear Lake Facility Acrylic Monomers HSE2Q Commitment

Required Education/Qualifications /Work experience


  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering with minimum 10 years' experience with IE&A

  • Computer skills required

  • Familiarization with NEC and NFPA 70E

  • Knowledgeable in motor control systems

  • Knowledgeable in all types of industrial instrumentation and process control loop systems

  • Basic knowledge of inline process and environmental analyzers and their functions

  • Skilled in interpreting electrical diagrams/schematics and loop drawings

  • Skilled in Instrument, Electrical and Analyzer terminologies and maintenance processes

  • Knowledgeable in transformer maintenance and troubleshooting process

  • Knowledgeable with substation maintenance and isolation processes

  • Knowledgeable in troubleshooting of electrical control circuitry and distribution systems

Demonstrated Competencies


  • Good written and oral communication skills to interface with operations and maintenance personnel

  • Ability to follow maintenance procedures for equipment

  • Ability to read, understand and utilize equipment drawings and P&ID's

  • Works well in teams
