Job Description:

Introduction

The State of CT, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, is seeking one (1) part-time Special Investigator (ME) to workat our facility in Farmington, CT., 21 hours per week,with benefit eligibility. The hours of work are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 3:00pm - 10:30pm, which will include occasional holiday coverage.

Our free-standing, modern facility is located on the Campus of the University of Connecticut Health Center and Medical School. The office is a state-wide medical examiner system charged with the investigation of sudden and unexpected deaths that by statute fall under our jurisdiction. Our agency operates 24/7/365 performing these death investigations.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency or quasi-public entity this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in conducting investigations related to alleged violations of state laws and regulations or sudden and unexplained deaths.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Visits scene of death; reviews medical records; may serve as photographer in routine cases; conducts investigations related to assigned complaints, alleged violations of state laws and regulations or sudden and/or unexplained deaths; interviews witnesses, complainants, medical and hospital personnel and others to obtain information; secures evidence in form of statements, documents, records and exhibits which may be used in administrative hearings and/or court proceedings; researches, collects and evaluates data; compiles information; writes reports and recommends appropriate corrective action; answers public inquiries; may prepare affidavits and applications for arrest warrants; may prepare search and seizure warrants; may issue citations; may testify at hearings and in court; may conduct surveillance; may secure samples for testing; may conduct legal research; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of medical terminology; knowledge of investigatory methods and techniques; knowledge of relevant state laws and regulations; knowledge of relevant professional terminology; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; interviewing skills; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of investigatory experience in a medicolegal investigative agency, police or military setting involving sudden and/or unexplained deaths.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

1. College training in forensic science may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.


2. A Master's degree in a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants with the following experience and training:

American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigations Certification.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, web based systems.

Ability to adapt to high stress an traumatic situations.

Experience working in a medical examiner/coroner office.

Prior experience working in a medical setting.

Experience reviewing medical records/medical terminology.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to be a Notary Public.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and facts stated in the application a thorough background investigation may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to disagreeable conditions and occasionally lift bodies.
