This position will work a hybrid in-person/remote schedule. There may be changes to this schedule based on training and operational needs. The headquarter location is Columbus.
The Ohio Attorney General's Office is currently seeking an experienced and detail-oriented individual for a Paralegal/Legal Assistant 1 position in the Criminal Justice Section. The successful candidate will provide paralegal support to and assist the litigation staff as needed with a wide variety of civil defense cases. The duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
-Researches judicial decisions, federal and/or state statutes, and other legal sources and reference materials in order to prepare responses to inquiries, complaints, claims, and legal and/or procedural issues to assist section attorneys;
-Helps prepare and respond to discovery requests and public records requests;
-Assists in the preparation and presentation of cases in litigation, including comprehensive document review, verification, and organization;
-Performs Internet and other computer-assisted searches for information and documents;
-Contacts opposing counsel or court/board personnel as may be necessary to assist in case preparation and presentation of cases;
-Assesses, logs, and indexes incoming and outgoing electronic and paper document productions;
-Uses document management software to prepare legal correspondence;
-Maintains attorneys’ electronic dockets;
-Drafts legal briefs and memoranda, pleadings, motions, and affidavits for review, approval, and signature of and/or use by section attorneys;
-Prepares case summaries, legal documents, and reports for review, approval, and signature of and/or use by section attorneys;
-Assists in trial preparation and/or settlement negotiations, including preparation of exhibits and demonstrative evidence, as well as using courtroom technology;
-Maintains case calendars and case files;
-Manually and/or electronically files legal documents with court on behalf of attorneys;
-Responds to general inquiries and performs other duties as assigned.

Successful completion of a certification program for paralegal or legal
assistant.
- OR 24 months' paid work experience as a paralegal/legal assistant.
- OR equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment noted above.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 2010
- Proficient in conducting legal research using Lexis Nexis and/or Westlaw
- Experience with complex litigation
- Experience with electronic discovery software, such as Everlaw
- A comprehensive understanding of the Office's document management system, iManage (or a
similar document management system)
- Ability to use document management system proficiently and effectively
