Job Description:

Summary: Under minimal supervision, performs intermediate and advanced maintenance and repair on motorcoaches, complying with company policies, safety and DOT regulations including other duties as assigned.  Mechanics must possess own basic tools to perform their job duties. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Within the industry time guidelines, inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair axles, spindles, bearings and seals; complete air conditioning systems; air system, including brakes, compressor, and valves; electrical systems, including alternators, lights, batteries, and wiring; steering systems, including sectors, pumps, tie rods, etc.; suspension, including air ride and wheel alignment; power train, including engine, transmission, and drive line components.

  • Perform Jefferson preventative maintenance inspections (PMI), as qualified, within the industry time guidelines.

  • Prime fuel systems on all types of Jefferson motorcoaches.

  • “Jump” start all vehicles and replace belts as needed.

  • Repair restroom valves as required.

  • Remove or install seats, tables, and bunk units.

  • Perform tire duties such as mounting, disassembling, balancing and replacing on buses.

  • Repair interior systems, such as gauges, baggage doors, seating systems and other functional and cosmetic tasks.

  • Fuel buses.

  • Use gauges, drills or grinders or other specialized diesel mechanic tools and equipment.

  • Change and/or repair lighting systems.

Additional Responsibilities:


  • May perform limited bodywork and repaint vehicles after an accident or breakdown.

  • May test drive repaired motorcoaches to ensure they are operating correctly.

  • May be required to travel to the site of a broken down motorcoach for repairs.

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent plus two-year degree in automotive or diesel mechanics and three years related experience or high school diploma (or equivalent) and five years related experience, plus AC certification for R132, R12 and R22 and Minnesota annual vehicle inspection certification.  Must be ASE certified for Diesel Engines (T2), Drive Train (T3), Brakes (T4), Suspension and Steering (T5), Electrical/Electronic Systems (T6), HVAC systems (T7) and PMI (T8).  Must be D.O.T. qualified and possess a Commercial Drivers License with a passenger endorsement and a medical card.

Skills/Abilities:


  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and written work orders.

  • Ability to add and subtract in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or verbal form. 

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where limited standardization exists.

Physical Demands:


  • Frequently required to stand long periods of time and use hands to finger, handle, or grasp objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.

  • Frequently required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  •  Occasionally required to walk, climb or balance, talk or hear.

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

  Work Environment:


  • Regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles (emissions).

  • Subjected to dust, dirt and grease conditions.

  •  Works near moving mechanical parts.

  • May occasionally work outdoors and be exposed to outdoor weather (heat and cold) conditions.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
