Crain's Chicago Business seeks a dynamic leader and experienced editor to guide its print and digital news team. This editor will operate at a high level, setting and executing the strategic direction for the newsroom in a competitive media market.

The Managing Editor will guide Crain's team of reporters, editors, researchers, designers, visual journalists and podcast producers. This editor will report to Editor Ann Dwyer and support efforts that create outstanding journalism that builds loyalty, trust and engagement. We are looking for a digitally savvy leader who can inspire excellence and innovation.

The ideal candidate will have experience managing a daily news team online and in print. This candidate will possess keen editorial judgment a deep knowledge of Chicago's business, political and cultural scene. This candidate will be comfortable dealing with breaking news on a day-to-day basis while also overseeing long-term projects. This candidate will also have first-hand experience running a digital news site and know how to grow audience by developing unique, timely and useful content.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This editor will:

- Oversee breaking news operations on the web while also working closely with teams putting together long-term projects, special features, and deeply reported investigative stories.

- Lead Crain's newsroom in developing a daily content and social strategy that builds a large loyal audience.

- Oversee the reporting, editing and design teams on the production of the weekly print edition.

- Develop workflows that enable reporters, producers and editors to work efficiently and effectively to report stories on the optimal platform at the optimal time.

- Coach and train the newsroom on digital best practices, including metrics and analytics, SEO strategy, audience research and cultivating source development through social media.

- Evaluate the performance of Crain's existing newsletters and social media channels and suggest strategies for improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Outstanding news judgment and demonstrated experience leading creative daily news coverage that builds and serves a loyal, engaged audience.

- Deep knowledge of Chicago's business, political and cultural history.

- Excellent editing ability and demonstrated skill in working under deadline pressure.

- Demonstrated experience as a newsroom manager in hiring, growing and inspiring journalists.

- Demonstrated project management experience.

- Demonstrated ability to work on deeply reported investigations.

- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and act quickly on new digital audience growth opportunities.

- Solid understanding of content management systems and web-based products and standards.

- Experience building large, loyal audiences through SEO, UX, audience analytics and social media.

- Excellent communication and presentation skills, verbal and written, with the ability to effectively collaborate across the organization, including with Crain's events and audience teams.

This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.
