JOB DESCRIPTION


Responsible for permanently joining metal parts using high heat application to form a permanent bond. May specialize in one of hundreds of different processes of welding to join metals together. Under general supervision, performs safe and efficient duties necessary in the heavy construction industry. The incumbent will need to operate in a safe and efficient manner following all personal protective equipment (PPE) and process requirements. Must be able to travel (relocate) from jobsite to jobsite for continued employment, able to work both scheduled and non-scheduled overtime, and able to work night (second or third) shift assignment. If slipforming operation is in progress, able to work 12 hours or more per day, 7 days per week, for two weeks plus period of time.

ACTIVITIES/TASKS/SCOPE

  • Capable of working outdoors in adverse (less than favorable) weather conditions.

  • Capable of working at 200 feet plus elevation.

  • Capable of working at depth up to 30 feet below ground level or floor.

  • Capacity for working where Fall Arresting type personal protective equipment is required.

  • Capable of work on two-point (window washer) suspended scaffold.

  • Capable of working on interior multi-point suspended scaffold.

CERTIFICATION/OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES




  • Use electrical currents to create heat and bond metals.

  • Join beams in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures and to join pipes in pipelines, power plants, and refineries.

  • Weld materials such as steel and titanium.

  • Use a rod and heat to join metals.

  • Operate welding machine that feeds wire to bond materials.

  • Use molten metal to join two pieces of metal.

  • Connect copper plumbing pipes and thinner metals.

  • Plan work by interpreting blueprints.

  • Determine welding position and type of metal to be fused.

  • Select and set up welding equipment.

  • Ensure welds meet standards and specifications.

  • Supervise machines or robots that perform automated welding tasks.

  • Load parts correctly and monitor machine constantly.

  • Use heat from an electric arc to cut and trim metal objects.
