We are seeking a Genetic Counselor Assistant (Oncology) to:


  • Work collaboratively to support the functions of the Oncology genetic counseling team.

  • Draw and update patient pedigrees using patient history forms.

  • Assist genetic counselors with administrative tasks such as sending faxes, writing letters of medical necessity and completing any additional paperwork, etc.

  • Call to obtain results or additional records from various hospital departments, outside laboratories, and/or physician offices prior to the appointment or as requested for emergent inpatient consults.

  • Perform literature reviews under the guidance of the genetic counselor.

Education:
Minimum – One (1) to two (2) years post High School education.
Preferred – Bachelor’s degree in a biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education.

Work Experience:
Preferred – Two years clinical experience in a genetics specialty clinic.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:


  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent computer skills.  Experience with word processing, database and spreadsheet software programs.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, department administrative staff, interdepartmental contacts and the public.

  • Ability to plan and organize the workflow in a busy office/unit environment and be self-directed and work with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to be flexible in response to changing demands.

  • Ability to handle a high volume of work under pressure.

  • Resourceful in problem solving, initiative and good judgment.

Physical Requirements:
Sedentary: Ability to lift up to 10 pounds maximum and occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as dockets, ledgers and small tools.  Although a sedentary job is defined as one, which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and other sedentary criteria are met.

Work Schedule:
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position scheduled to work Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. No weekends or holidays are required. Hours may vary based on the needs of the department.
