Nature of Work


Leads the Master’s swim program at the City of Ann Arbor Pools. Provides instruction and leadership to implement our master’s swim program. Responsible for the creation and implementation of swim workouts, supervision of assistant coaches and assuring consistency throughout the program’s implementation. Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of stroke technique and aquatics teaching strategies for adult swimmers at all levels. Behave in a professional manner, work as a team player and adhere to program policies. The master’s swim program includes 12 weekly practices and occasional additional activities and swim events.


Starting Hourly Rate: $17.74

Work Schedule
Masters practices are held in the early mornings and evenings weekdays and on weekend mornings year-round. Schedule is flexible with an estimate of 12 to 18 hours per week.


Required Qualifications
• Advanced training in stroke technique for competitive swimming.
• Verbal skills, active listening, and excellent customer service skills.
• Commitment to continued development in coaching techniques.
• Ability to work flexible hours including early mornings and evenings.
• Enjoy swimming and share your enthusiasm with others.
• Must possess current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification by start of employment. Employees will have an opportunity for Lifeguard certification reimbursement up to $200 upon working a minimum of 200 hours (certification must be from and valid for current calendar year).


Preferred Qualifications
• 3 or more years coaching swimming, preferably adults.
• Experience as a competitive swimmer.
• Working knowledge of program activity practices and procedures.


Physical Requirements
Positions in this class typically require: walking, standing, hearing, speaking, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, grasping, reaching, and repetitive motions. Move and lift light objects up to 30 lbs.
