Position Summary
The GIS Data Scientist is primarily responsible for developing and maintaining Claritas’ geographic definitions, cartographic boundaries, and related data.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead transition to 2020 Census geographies and cartographic boundaries
Lead annual Cartographic Update and assist with annual Demographic Update incorporating the most recent source data and updated geographic definitions
Maintain geographic cross reference files for standard Census and political, postal, media, and telco boundaries
Translate new product ideas into well-posed GIS data science challenges and solve them
Understand and reconcile disparate data sources to make stronger products
Participate in the broader GIS community to stay current with the latest techniques and software
Create technical and client-friendly methodology documentation
Collaborate with cross functional teams to design and implement client solutions
Perform related work as required
Skills, Education and Experience:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Applied Demography, Data Science, Computer Science or related quantitative field
5+ years of experience in a Geographic Information Systems role using GIS applications
Strong Technical proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS, MapInfo, or other GIS software
Technical proficiency in SQL, Python, SPSS, R, or SAS
Familiarity with basic demographic data
Disposition to simplify: streamline work processes, simply communicate complex statistical concepts

Highly preferred:
Master’s degree GIS, Geography, Applied Demography, Data Science, Computer Science or related quantitative field
Experience using TomTom Advanced Navigable Map data
Experience utilizing U.S. Census Bureau TIGER/Line Shapefiles
Working knowledge of Decennial Census and American Community Survey (ACS) data
Experience working with cloud-based or big data technologies
