Job Description:

Solvay’s Novecare Coatings group is focused on developing specialty additives that support the production and performance of waterborne polymer dispersions and formulations. The utility of these materials allows for them to be applied in a wide range of end use markets such as coatings, adhesives, inks, and construction materials. A major focus in this area is directed towards supporting the development of more environmentally friendly materials with improved sustainability, such as lower volatile organic compound (VOC) content. Colloidal science is fundamental to the work in understanding and enhancing the stability of small particle size dispersions and improving the compatibility between organic and inorganic materials. Studies are geared to cultivate structure-function relationships to improve scientific understanding and guide the development of newer materials with better performance properties. This position will work under the direct supervision of a senior scientist on projects related to new additives development targeted for use in water based polymerizations, such as emulsion polymerization. Work will primarily be lab based and involve material synthesis and evaluation using industry accepted methods as well as data collection employing sound scientific principles. The student will have the opportunity to work with the senior scientist in developing key performance trends and correlations to guide future work.
