ABOUT THE POSITION

The County of Riverside's University Health System-MC, is seeking a Per Diem Medical Interpreter/Translator for the Language & Cultural Services Department at the Moreno Valley Medical Center.

The Medical Interpreter/Translator will perform interpreting and translating duties for the Riverside University Health System-MC, requiring fluency in both Spanish and English (Multiple language options are a plus: ASL + Spanish, Spanish + Portuguese, Spanish + Vietnamese, ETC). Candidates with Health Care Interpreter Certification from a National Organization (CCHI) or The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) are preferred.

The incumbent will act as an interpreter for patients and medical staff and as translators of a variety of forms, documents, pamphlets, brochures and miscellaneous correspondence for the department but they are not eligible for bilingual compensation. Per Diem personnel are distinguished from regular employees in that they receive additional compensation in lieu of County fringe benefits and work assignments may be on a flexible work hour schedule.

This position requires the flexibility to work weekend as part of the regular shift.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Interprets oral and written questions and explanations from English to a foreign language and vice versa.

• Interprets complicated medical procedures, medial diagnoses, treatment options, doctors instructions regarding follow-up treatment and medical care required after hospitalization to non-English speaking patients, their families, and others on the need to know basis.

• Interprets patients physical histories and symptoms of disorder; interprets to obtain informed consent to treatment from patient, next of kin, or legal guardian.

• Explains hospital policies, procedures and protocols to patients and families; may assist in providing general information to the public.

• The ability to multitask, use a computer, handle a video-phone, iPad and other electronic communication means.

• Understand the basic concepts of a culturally competent organization and apply it when interpreting

• The ability to work with high level professional interpreters in a professional organization in "we as a team" environment.

• The ability to stay professional and keep composure when interpreting delicate or critical situations like end of life. (Interpreters will always have access to behavioral health professionals if needed)

• The ability to be exposed to medical procedures like surgery and possible situations with large amounts of blood present (very rare). Willingness to enter protected into a contagious environment like COVID units. (Once or twice a week) Willingness to perform in Emergency Room Trauma environments with ER staff.

• Willingness to participate in a positive encouraging environment where we work as a team, consistently develop and participate in team building exercises.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: Principles of English and foreign language grammar, spelling and punctuation; Foreign cultures; commonly and vernacularly used medical terminology.

Ability to: Speak, read and write in English and one or more foreign languages; Accurately and fluently interpret and translate from a foreign language into English and vise versa; Establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, their families, physicians, nurses and fellow workers; Work effectively with the very ill, injured and emotionally stressed.

Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a certificate of proficiency, issued by the California State Board of Education, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test and completion of a course in medical terminology of at least 3 semester units or 4.5 quarter units obtained from a school that is institutionally accredited by a regional association. (six months of experience as a certified nursing assistant, medical record clerk, medical assistant or similar position which provided knowledge of medical terminology may be substituted for the required course.)

Per Diem employees participate in the 401(a) Temporary and Part-Time Employees' Retirement Plan and are required to contribute 3.75% of salary to the pension plan. The County contributes a matching amount.
