Job title: Director, Radiation Protection 5


Organization: Environmental Safety and Health


Position Summary


The Director, Radiation Protection is responsible for implementing and maintaining the 10CFR835 program at LANL, including the development of procedures and policies to protect against radiation hazards, control personnel radiation exposures, and minimize environmental releases, coordination and oversight of the radiation protection training program, and participation in internal assessments and audits. The Director, Radiation Protection provides technical oversight and guidance for the clearance and release of items and property in accordance with DOE Order 458.1. The Director, Radiation Protection stays abreast of federal, state, local, and industry radiation protection regulations and ensures compliance with the standards.


This position reports to the ES&H Program Manager.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):



  • Oversees the development of radiation protection procedures, methodologies, and capabilities.

  • Reviews work documents and procedures for radiological safety and regulatory compliance.

  • Develops and/or reviews survey plans, Final Status Surveys, and release reports in support of DOE O 458.1 and MARSSIM activities.

  • Oversees the RP Training Program.

  • Leads assessments to ensure regulatory compliance and effective operations.

  • Serves as a voting member on the ALARA Committee.

  • May act as a Subject Matter Expert in specific areas and provide technical support to Project Managers.

  • Will train and mentor junior team members.


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):



  • Demonstrated expertise in performing DOE O 458.1, MARSSIM, and MARSAME activities.

  • Proficiency in Visual Sample Plan, ProUCL, and RESRAD software.

  • In depth working knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and DOE orders as well as ISM and EMS.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of radiological principles, concepts, and techniques and ability to perform highly complex and critical tasks.

  • Excellent interpersonal and analytical skills.


Education and Experience Required:


Bachelors' degree combined with 14 years' relative experience with at least 6 years of management responsibility. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position's duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.


Education Equivalency: 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college.


Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or NRRPT is desired.
