POSITION OBJECTIVES:

Takeda is committed to the long term strategy and vision to translate science into life-changing medicines that make critical differences for our patients around the world. The Global Biologics team within R&D consists of approx. 85 scientists across two US sites (Cambridge MA and San Diego), and aims to discover novel therapeutic large molecule biologics serving our four main therapeutic areas Oncology, Gastroenterology, Neuroscience and Rare Disease.

We are excited to pursue the search for a scientific leadership role within our Biotherapeutic Engineering team at the level of a  Principal Scientist or, if candidate has the appropriate demonstrated experience, at the higher level of Associate Director. The successful candidate will have excellent experience and expertise, depth and breadth of knowledge in the field of antibody and protein engineering, directed evolution and drug discovery for modalities that include mono- and multi-specifics. Together with significant management experience, and a team-centric and inspiring attitude, you will be an excellent addition to our fast paced and exciting team of committed scientists.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:


  • Demonstrates outstanding experience and expertise, depth and breadth of knowledge in the field of antibody and protein engineering, directed evolution and drug discovery.

  • Bring significant years of experience with an industry style mindset to deeply mine repertoires for therapeutic application

  • Draws on expertise from at least one discovery platform (in vivo or in vitro based) to lead platform working group within the team. Continued development of detailed and improvements to workflows for associated platform.

    • Brings deep understanding of B cell biology, humoral immunity, immunoglobulin genetics, generation of naïve and immune repertoires, affinity maturation/stability optimization engineering

    • Excellent experience in sequence analysis  (NGS and Sanger) to aid discovery and optimization workflows



  • Serve as a scientific driver for research strategy that impacts the internal group and beyond.

  • Ambassador for the Global Biologics Department through serving as biologics lead, scientifically inputting to the project teams, proposing discovery and optimization plans, leading the biologics aspects of the program while overseeing and driving forward.

  • Contributes to continual deepening of the expertise through external network development, evaluating new opportunities in partnership with business development.

  • Organizational leader who has accountability for the performance and results of this significant research function.

    • Empowerment to lead a small team of highly qualified and skilled scientists in their mission to generate therapeutic biologics, with many programs in multi-specific formats

    • Team-centric mindset, a leader that can inspire and grow team members, while serving as a role model and mentor across the entire team.

    • Develops the next-generation of organization and project leaders, acting as a champion of new opportunities.

    • Responsible for effective resourcing within team to drive programs forward in and efficient manner



  • Excellent knowledge of data analysis tools to ensure thorough evaluation of datasets and information based next step decisions.

  • Lead team through in-lab presence, designing and efficiently executing discovery /optimization campaigns including affinity maturation, developability; technology development.

  • Serve as an effective lead and ambassador for biologic discovery programs, collaborate and interact with team members and internal /external groups for high efficiency and transparency to enable progression of molecules.

  • Demonstrate pro-activity through identifying areas to improve efficiency, technology development to bring new innovation to the team, where appropriate.

  • High level of diligence in all data tracking, uploading and recording using data management systems within the department

  • Independently manage workload, while designing, develop and execute research assignments and contribute to multiple projects in parallel

  • Initiate and lead external interactions, collaborations and workflows where appropriate

  • Contribution to the preparation of patents, documentation for IND, and publications.

EDUCATION, BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:


  • PhD in a scientific discipline (10+ years’ experience), or MS (14+ years’ experience) or BS (16+ years’ experience) in Immunology/Cell Biology/Biochemistry or related fields.

  • 5 years of industry experience required in antibody discovery in a biotech/pharma setting.

  • 5 years of managerial experience required.

  • Exceptional knowledge of antibody discovery and engineering; directed evolution, with remarkable experience using in vivo and/or  in vitro platform.

  • Excellent familiarity with antibody repertoire analysis- NGS data handling and analysis from either in vivo  or in vitro sources.

  • Experiences with multi-specific antibody modalities is required.

  • Knowledge of modalities such as engineering for cell and gene therapy is preferred.

TRAVEL REQUIREMETS:

  • Attend scientific meetings or conferences on a yearly basis
