Position Summary:

UTHealth is looking for a Healthcare Risk Specialist to support our Legal Affairs team. This employee supports all aspects of the institution's healthcare risk management activities, including all professional liability insurance matters. Contributes to the day to day operations of the risk management program that includes an organizational risk approach to exposures, loss control/loss prevention actions and evaluations. Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to demonstrate flexibility, discretion and professionalism in difficult situations, and work collaboratively and independently to achieve results.

This is a fulltime position that is classified as salaried and exempt. It is eligible for all UTHealth benefits including healthcare coverage and participation in a pension plan administered by the State of Texas. You will work in the heart of the Texas Medical Center in an office that is located in our University Center Tower.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Assists with day-to-day operations of the risk management program, including coordinating all healthcare claims, lawsuits, and licensing matters filed against the institution and its healthcare provider employees and communicates with The University of Texas System Office of General Counsel, the Texas Attorney General, various private plaintiff and defense attorneys in defense of same.
2. Supports attorneys in working up defense of healthcare claims and lawsuits.
3. Assists with institution's professional credentialing activities and corresponds with The University of Texas System for professional liability insurance coverage of institution's healthcare providers
4. Gathers and analyzes data and prepares reports for the Healthcare Risk Manager. May coordinate with facility staff and Healthcare Risk Manager to prepare and present data to institutional personnel and outside counsel.
5. Organizes and maintains several databases and files relating to scope of work.
6. Handles routine inquiries and replies to correspondence and telephone contacts within parameters established by supervisor.
7. Composes correspondence and memoranda; creates tables, charts, graphs, and manuscripts; formulates reports and presentation materials.
8. Assesses and evaluates incidence, claims, and other data sources for risk related trends and reports to Healthcare Risk Manager and university leadership; proactively identifies gaps in design/process to resolve adverse outcomes and claims.
9. Reviews patient complaints that may be the source of potential legal action, discusses and offers solutions when possible to resolve patient and/or family grievances perceived as potential liability claims in collaboration with Healthcare Risk Manager and patient representatives. This excludes general Customer Service complaints.
10. Reviews and recommends new or amended policies and procedures in collaboration with Healthcare Risk Manager and provides support for applicable policy and procedure committees when requested.
11. At the request of Healthcare Risk Manager, serves on appropriate clinical and non-clinical committees where risk management expertise is beneficial in a capacity of expert advisor or consultant or attends as appropriate based on availability.
12. Handles confidential information and sensitive issues.
13. Ensures safe care to patients, staff, and visitors; adheres to all university policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity, and quality of service
14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Registered Nurse, or other clinical healthcare practice license, preferred.
Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) certification preferred.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree in a clinical health science related field required or a juris doctorate from an accredited law school preferred.

Minimum Experience:

Five (5) years in a clinical health care or medical / legal environment to include two (2) years of practicing RN or other clinical health science practical experience.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
