Civil Associate I - Construction Services at Michael Baker International in Dearborn, Michigan

DESCRIPTION

With an office in Dearborn, Michigan and projects throughout the state, the successful candidate will work under the direction of the Construction Services Manager in the office and on inspection projects throughout southeastern Michigan. The Construction Project Engineer will perform inspection services on road and bridge projects for MDOT and other local agency clients. Between field assignments, this position may involve design tasks such as permit reviews, constructability reviews of plans for upcoming projects as well as assisting the Construction Services Manager with preparation of Letters of Interest for upcoming proposals, reviewing and processing of invoices, communicating with clients about staffing needs, and tracking progress on current projects.


  • Review plans and specifications associated with assigned work on active construction contracts and notify client of apparent constructability issues or errors in plans
  • Oversee daily operations of contractor or subcontractor personnel to ensure that work is being performed in accordance with plans and specifications, and provide field direction to Michael Baker inspection staff assigned to the project
  • Answer detailed contractor questions about plan and specification requirements
  • Identify contractor means and methods that are inconsistent with plans and specifications, and discuss needed changes with the contractor as well as the client
  • Make measurements and observations of work being performed to ensure accurate quantities are tracked for completed work
  • Prepare detailed field drawings or electronic templates to support the calculations being used to justify the pay quantities
  • Monitor material testing needs and schedule subconsultants for material tests associated with work being performed including testing concrete for yield, slump, and air content, or testing soils or aggregates for moisture and density
  • Understand and apply testing frequencies for various materials used on the contract to ensure that enough tests are being taken to cover the work performed
  • Electronically document pay quantities, material requirements, and contractor staff in a daily work report utilizing Field Book/Field Manager software

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
  • 0-2 years of construction inspection or engineering experience in transportation
  • Fundamentals of Engineering Exam pursuit or passed, P.E. is a plus
  • Software knowledge or proficiency - roadway design software, CAD (MicroStation & AutoCAD), Microsoft Office, Field Book/Field Manager software
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in organization and presentation of documentation
  • Familiarity with construction materials, methods, and processes
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Ability to communicate clearly
  • Working experience with MDOT is preferred
