Within the Enterprise IT Domain for which she/he is responsible, the Portfolio Execution Manager will assume the overarching responsibility for supporting organizational and IT leadership in their efforts to oversee, manage and leverage the entire life cycle of IT investments and initiatives to optimally achieve the domain?s goals and objectives as they align with the goals of Enterprise IT, which in turn align to and support Emerson?s business objectives.  The position shall strive to make the best possible use of all project resources within the domain and deliver the maximum value and benefits from the projects and programs within the portfolio.  The Portfolio Execution Manager is also a primary source of information relative to reporting the state and performance to expectations for the initiatives within the domain?s project portfolio. This Portfolio Execution Manager will also be the LEAN champion for Project Excellence, leading efforts to appropriately infuse LEAN and agile methods for portfolio management, resource management and project execution management into Enterprise IT.

 

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Work with leadership within the Enterprise IT domain and PMO to establish processes related to project portfolio management, including but not limited to the following:


    • Overall structure, definitions, categories and criteria

    • Idea/Demand management (Project intake)

    • Evaluation, selection and prioritization of demand

    • Strategic alignment of projects, programs and resources

    • Resourcing, executing, tracking, measuring, and reporting of results

    • Identifying necessary improvements to domain-specific processes and deliverables and implementing those improvements


  • Organize and establish programs for execution

  • Provide visibility to all ideas, demand, projects and programs within the domain portfolio at appropriate levels of detail based on audience

    • Project & Portfolio Managers

    • Domain Service Owners (customers)

    • Domain Leadership (customers)


  • Integrate into the domain leadership?s strategic/operational planning processes to fully understand the key business drivers, key objectives/metrics and financial targets.

  • Conduct regular meetings with domain leadership to inform and alert them of any issues arising from the performance of individual projects within the portfolio to provide a proactive opportunity to mitigate variances to the plan.

  • Coordinate with Portfolio Execution Managers across Enterprise IT domains to identify that any cross-domain touchpoints between projects are understood and that priorities and resources are aligned to meet the collective project timelines.

  • Manage all Project Excellence project management resources responsible for managing projects aligned to the domain and ensure the appropriate Enterprise IT project execution methodology is being utilized and adhered to.

  • Ensure domain project execution is aligned to any overarching Project Excellence service goals/objectives.

  • Manage projects or programs within the portfolio as needed based on complexity or business priority.

  • Actively work to encourage the growth of all Project Excellence direct reports through ongoing coaching, targeted training and more challenging assignments.

  • Lead project, program and portfolio planning and execution developmental efforts across the Project Excellence service

  • Champion the use of LEAN project, Agile,SAFe Agile and other LEAN methodologies, practices and tools across Enterprise IT domains

    • LEAN concepts to manage the initiative work

    • Enable agile strategy and portfolio planning and management, supporting agile, waterfall and hybrid delivery models to deliver portfolio outcomes more flexibly

    • Provide information to monitor progress and the work remaining to create awareness to determine if the initiatives will meet the objectives in the planned time.


    EDUCATION/LANGUAGE


    • BS with a technical background (MIS, Engineering, etc.) or equivalent experience

    • PMI, ITIL or Agile certification is a plus

     

    EXPERIENCE/SKILLS


    • Minimum 10+ years of IT experience

    • Minimum 7+ years managing programs and projects of varying size and complexity using industry-standard methodologies

    • Minimum 5+ years experience using agile and LEAN concepts to manage project execution and portfolios of initiative work, including Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).  Also, experience implementing SAFe Agile Release Teams into organizations is preferred.

    • Experience with a variety of IT disciplines such as ERP systems, application systems, Communication and Security technologies, current hardware technologies, and project methodologies (Waterfall\Agile)

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain and ?sell? the portfolio goals and objectives to business as well as technical leadership.

    • Strong business acumen, including domain-specific knowledge of the enterprise and its business units.  Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and communicate the portfolio objectives, inspire and motivate staff, and maintain alignment to the business strategy.

    • Possess a high degree of political sensitivity, astuteness and the ability to effectively use the informal power structure of the organization to achieve success and clear obstacles for the portfolio.

    • Empathetic and able to vary styles of interaction to match the needs of a variety of business and technical audiences, as well as temperaments and personalities.

    • Effective influencing and negotiation experience and skills in an environment with high competition for resources.

    • Excellent analytical and execution skills.

    • Familiarity with the use of reporting tools to monitor portfolio activities and analyze performance.
