MISSION / SUMMARY:


The Continuous Improvement Tech at Graphic Packaging is a function that supports the quality and overall plant goals to meet SQF, HACCP, and Food Defense standards. The CI tech is responsible for helping to develop and lead training on manufacturing processes to meet/exceed the company's key performance indicators. In addition, the CI tech will complete accurate inspections, process audits, and quality testing at pre-defined frequencies on processes and cartons starting with setup through the shipping process. Provides support and guidelines to management and employees with regards to the plant's product safety programs (HACCP, SQF, Food Defense, etc.) and Lean initiatives. Supports the effective daily operations of the QA Lab, non-conformance areas, and the inspection/quality hold areas. Provides effective support to the CI department in the absence of the CI Manager.


JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include but are not limited to the following.


Instructions: This portion should include Principal Duties and Responsibilities for a position. Include only those current duties and responsibilities that account for 5% or more of the work.



  • Oversees hourly employees on quality and process-related production activities.

  • Assist in meeting manufacturing schedules and coordinating production operations, with a focus on inventory with related quality defects.

  • Communicates with teammates and production employees on proceeding and succeeding shifts to establish process stability and to ensure a smooth transition between shifts.

  • Verifies the quality of product visual assessment and random inspection using specific testing tools and methods.

  • Verifies quality and process compliance through process audits.

  • Maintains accurate records of all tests and inspections.

  • Assist operators on troubleshooting, quality checks, and identifying defects.

  • Utilize established ERP system for maintenance notifications, execute inventory transactions, and coordinate quality hold activities.

  • Ensure hourly employees work safely by participating in daily Gemba audits, safety team, and random facility audits.

  • Ensures plant's compliance to 3rd party Functional Control / Pre-Requisite program requirements including HACCP, SQF, and other customer-mandated programs.

  • Participates in safety and quality behavior-based observations.

  • Oversees all sorting activities (establish sort standards, mentor, and monitor temporary employees, SAP entries, and housekeeping).

  • Performs customer and internal sampling requirements.

  • Participate in internal and external customer visits.

  • Manages Color standard and 1st run color materials process. Works directly with operators to achieve high-quality color material.

  • Manages quality lab (testing, calibrations, troubleshooting, housekeeping, and training).

  • Develops and maintains documents and SOPs as needed.

  • COA's, EOM reporting, and Color Management.

  • Gathers data as requested for projects/troubleshooting, etc.

  • Gives the OK to sell when CI Manager is unavailable.

  • Administrates and manages internal statistical processing software for daily process insight and metric development

  • Participates in the planning and execution of Lean-based and Continuous Improvement related initiatives when required. Includes Kaizen planning, action item follow-up/resolution, and effective reporting on processes and obstacle.

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:



  • Quality Management Concentration Career Development Certificate from Ivy Tech or equivalent is preferred.

  • Familiarity with AIB / HACCP / SQF compliance standards are highly regarded.

  • Familiarity with Food defense compliance standards.

  • Highly adaptive and critical thinking skills.

  • Troubleshooting utilizing appropriate tools and methods, particularly from the LSS body of knowledge.

  • Technical writing skills.

  • Ability and willingness to travel to customer locations as needed for customer issues with a critical quality impact.

  • Technical savvy and skilled computer literacy when utilizing internal ERP system, internal statistical software (WinSPC and Minitab), or customer-related database usage requirements.

  • Visual Color Discrimination, the ability to match or detect differences between colors, including shades of colors.

  • Six Sigma certified preferred.






Required Skills


EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:



  • Bachelors Degree preferred.

  • Lean Manufacturing, Continuing Education Program or Six Sigma preferred.

  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills with emphasis on Word & Excel.

SCHEDULE DEMANDS:



  • General schedule is nightshift; however, employees must be willing to work alternate schedules that may include early mornings, day shift, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.

  • Occasional overnight travel to include flying, driving, riding or by rail.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:



  • Sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time.

  • Occasional lifting.

  • Reading computer screens or other electronic devices.

  • Use of various hand and electrical office equipment.
