Job Description

The Medical Radiation Physicist is responsible for all physics and radiation safety duties and will oversee all operations related to clinical medical physics that are provided at El Camino Hospital. The MRP will conduct all aspects of the radiation therapy physics consistent with the mission and goals for El Camino Health, including clinical medical physics support, equipment calibration and commissioning, maintaining of appropriate quality assurance for equipment and treatment delivery, compliance with radiation safety, licensing issues, and other pertinent regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Maintain established El Camino Health policies, procedures and objectives as well as quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control policies. Assists in developing policies and procedures.


  • Assists in the development of long-term strategic planning, and ways to optimize patient care, staff working environment and cost containment.


  • Provides assistance and consultation with all medical staff with treatment planning as required, requested or indicated. Assures accuracy of simulations and treatment delivery. Generates 3D conformal, IMRT, VMAT, HDR and Cyber Knife treatment plans. Actively participates in physician directed chart rounds.


  • Performs annual calibration of linear accelerators and simulators as required by JCAHO, ACR and state law. Contracts for yearly ALARA reports.


  • Performs computerized dose calculations and provides the isodose plans for external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy treatments to the radiation oncologist within two working days of request. Conformal and IMRT plans within five working days.


  • Checks all patient charts weekly and performs IMRT QA (using ArcCheck) within three days of the start of treatment for accuracy, completeness and compliance with the patient's prescription. Makes necessary corrections and changes as appropriate. Also checks all patients' chart at the end of treatment for completeness.


  • Performs quality assurance testing on all radiation therapy equipment to assure compliance and accuracy for billing of continuing physics for all medical radiation physics, dosimetry, and treatment devices.


  • Takes necessary steps to ensure that the equipment is maintained in appropriate working conditions.


  • Prepares and presents quality assurance reports and maintains all quality assurance records required in connection with the use of radiation therapy equipment


  • Performs annual survey regarding all treatment equipment including linear accelerators and simulation machine and system administrator duties for Varian Eclipse TPS and MOSAIQ electronic medical record Advises and consults for the Radiation Oncology in regards to the potential purchase and installation of radiation oncology equipment, including accelerators, simulators and treatment planning computers.


  • Coordinates and performs data measurement and machine acceptance to bring new technology on line in a timely manner.


  • Participates in the safety and quality assurance for Radiation Oncology Department, to support the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for all Radiation Oncology matters, both non-emergent and emergent.


  • Performs related work as required


Qualifications

Master's degree in medical physics or medical radiation physics.

Five (5) years medical physics experience.

Experience with Stereotactic Radiation Surgery (SRS), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), High and/or Low Dose Brachytherapy, superficial therapy, and external beam treatment planning.

License/Certification/Registration Requirements

Board Certified American Board of Radiology in Radiation Therapy Physics and /or American Board of Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology Physics preferred.

Board of Licensure for Professional Medical Physicists preferred.

Valid Radioactive Material License.
