The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As a Sr Analytical Chemist-Forensics Focus you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:


  • Partner with 3M’s Corporate Research Analytical Laboratory to implement new Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) testing methodology in the plant analytical lab

  • Developing expertise in 3M manufacturing processes, products, and challenges.

  • Leading studies to support optimization of manufacturing processes.

  • Leading development and validation of both physical and analytical test methods to solve product defects or production challenges.

  • Operating a variety of analytical instruments including but not limited to GC, MS, autotitrator, microscopy, HPLC, FTIR, DSC, DMA, TGA, MFI, and rheometer

  • Drawing conclusions based on valid data that can withstand scrutiny and translating analytical results and conclusions into practical recommendations and solutions for manufacturing.

  • Engaging production operators and engineers to understand manufacturing processes and the connection of those processes to lab measurements.

  • Engaging scientists and engineers across multiple functions and locations for information or further analysis.

  • Researching raw materials or new analytical techniques.

  • Working in a team environment with other chemists/engineers and willing to openly brainstorm in group settings.

  • Build, champion, and implement the Manufacturing Forensics playbook with leadership from platform lead and steering committee.

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:


  • Master’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution

  • Five (5) years of laboratory experience in a private, public, government or military environment

  • Three (3) years of experience in separations with an emphasis on Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:


  • PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or related discipline from an accredited institution

  • GC experience that includes MassHunter software, quantitative and headspace sample analysis

  • Experience working in a manufacturing setting

  • Demonstrated experience to analyze problems, diagnose root cause and apply corrective actions

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of statistical and quality data analysis tools such as: exploratory data analysis, Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (R&R), Analysis of Variance, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Capability, acceptance sampling, correlation and regression, and/or experimental design

  • Ability to organize workload by setting priorities, multitasking, delegating and asking for help when needed

  • Strong written communication skills for concise technical reports

  • Excellent verbal communication skills to communicate and influence non-analytical audiences

  • Experience in successfully leading projects with virtual team members

Travel: May include up to 10% domestic
