Position Description:

Founded by the CEO along with a few of his neighbors as a grassroots effort in 1990, Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars (DRDFS) works out of the global headquarters of Plastipak Packaging in Plymouth, Michigan. With Plastipak's support, DRDFS has been able to grow to 14 high school partners, serving over 350 students and awarding over $550,000 in scholarships each year.

Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars is currently seeking a detail-oriented, goal driven and self-motivated Communications and Development Director. The Communications and Development Director will work directly with the Executive Director and will be responsible for implementing, coordinating and executing the fundraising and communication operations of the organization. The ideal candidate is highly self-motivated, professional, experienced in fundraising and communications and is capable of managing their workload in fast-paced non-profit environment. In this role, the Communications and Development Director will have the opportunity to further our mission of helping local students prepare for life after high school by growing our network of supporters through both fundraising and communications efforts with individuals and businesses across the region.

This is a full-time position based in Plymouth, MI.

Responsibilities:

Communications:


  • Develop digital and print materials (examples include: creation of press releases and blogs, quarterly newsletter, annual appeal content, email blasts, etc.)

  • Create content, manage and grow network on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn)

  • Oversee the functionality of the website, evaluate and manage website performance, collaborate with website developer as needed and develop, maintain and update website content.

  • Implement the DRDFS communications strategy to expand the organization’s reach and meet communications/PR goals.

  • Serve as the staff lead for the Publicity and Recognition Committee

Fund Development:


  • Work with the Board of Directors and Executive Advisory Board to develop and execute strategies to meet annual and long-term fundraising goals

  • Interface with DRDFS’ financial consultant team to build the annual revenue budget and plan for long-term fund development growth

  • Implement and manage annual high school partner fundraising efforts

  • Coordinate fundraisers (DRDFS signature events like the Celebration Luncheon) in addition to setting up and preparing for donor meetings, sponsorship solicitations, guest list management, contractor management, tracking pledges and sending acknowledgements

  • Serve as the staff lead for the Fundraising Committee

  • Manage and maintain the donor database to ensure all information is accurate

  • Seek out, and support DRDFS team in applying for and securing grants

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 3+ years of experience in a related fund development or communications role

  • Experience with fund development and grant writing; proven track record of achieving fundraising targets

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated; able to take initiative, manage, and complete multiple tasks within deadlines and within budget

  • Experience with planning and executing small to large/complex fundraising events

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization in a friendly and professional manner

  • Adaptable and flexible to assignment and project changes

  • Innovative problem solver

  • Strong writing and communications skills; willing to make public presentations in a variety of settings

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite

  • Experience with email marketing software (Constant Contact preferred)

  • Experience with updating and maintaining donor management software (Little Green Light preferred)

  • Ability to balance a high volume of work in a fast-paced business environment

  • Work beyond normal work schedule as necessary to fulfill position responsibilities

  • Desire to help metro Detroit students overcome hurdles to achieve a post-secondary degree
