Purpose

This position seeks to fill a research role in applied spectroscopy and diagnostics to develop advanced techniques for species and temperature measurement. Candidates should have a demonstrated record in one or more of: 1) technical accomplishment in the field of applied spectroscopy, 2) experience applying spectroscopic and other diagnostic tools to complex systems such as internal combustion engines, and 3) innovating new measurement and diagnostic approaches. The chosen candidate is expected to execute research projects in the areas of: 1) spectroscopic measurement of gaseous transients in internal combustion engines; 2) spatio-temporal analysis of chemical processes in catalysts and emission control systems; and 3) in-situ temperature measurements of gas and solid species. Of particular interest is experience with: mid- and near-infrared laser adsorption spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, blackbody radiation, and advanced combustion engines. The research will be conducted to accomplish objectives defined by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) and other DOE programs.

The position is in the Applied Catalysis and Emissions Research Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division. However, the successful candidate will collaborate with staff across ORNL. Research will be conducted at the National Transportation Research Center at ORNL. The successful candidate will be expected to serve as a technical communicator at conferences and project review meetings as well as interface with collaborating scientists at other national labs, industry, and universities.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

- Conduct pioneering research in spectroscopy to provide unique insights into engine systems, catalyst systems, and energy conversion processes

- Present and report research results in high-impact peer reviewed journals, conferences and project reviews

- Write and submit research and development proposals

Qualifications Required

- A PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent degree with experience in applied spectroscopy and instrument development

- A record of excellence in applied spectroscopy research as evidenced through peer-reviewed journal publications, and patents

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
